Hi group, my drabble has been sent off. Thanks so much for your suggestions and help!

I was super puzzled though as I was getting different word counts. The word limit is exactly 100 words and the submission guidelines said they use Google Docs for the word count. I pasted my drabble in different programs and I was always a few words short or had a few too many.

This article explains the why:
https://thehappybeavers.com/why-word-count-differ-programs/

After some dickering around, I discovered the em dashes and ellipses in my story were creating the problem, so I replaced them and everything adds up across the programs. Whew!!

Okay, so the graphic counter post has me again wanting to get into graphics, but I'm very limited with my ability to do so. I have my work computer that I can get online with, and then my computer at home that I usually can NOT get online with. I can't remember the art programs I used to use way back when, but I know they were online freeware that they did not require downloading anything. Can I get some recs of what programs to use, please and thank you, both online and off???

The tumblr post about the tracker is: 2022 writing tracker.

Oh, I can't remember who was looking for a new program to edit their pics with, but I just discovered a new one (to me at least)

- Photopea - free to use, set up like Photoshop including some of the filters. Has preset templates you can use as well

Some others

- Pixlr - free to use for the most part (extra features they want you to sign up for their membership), relatively easy to figure out how to use. I've actually been making all my graphics and icons since the end of last year using this by switching between Pixlr/X and Pixlr/E

- Fotor - same as Pixlr from what I can tell

So, here's an idea for you guys.  I know some of you aren't so much into fanfic writing anymore, but you can still use existing stories as inspiration.  Any public domain story (basically copyright free) can be used as inspiration or to remake as original fic (and thus be published and able to earn income).  This is why there's so many versions of Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.  Maybe Alice is an Alec? Or maybe Alice is the bad guy and the Queen of Hearts is just trying to wrestle her kingdom back from the grips of chaos? Maybe Dorothy winds up in a steampunk nightmare? What if Glenda is the bad guy and has tricked everyone into believing she's good? You get the idea.  Shakespeare's another good one. Think any Jane Austen or Charles Dicken book is included as well (explaining all the versions of Pride and Prejudice and A Christmas Carol).

Here's a link to find out how to determine if a book (or work) is under public domain, though it got confusing to me after a while; it might be easier to google "is X public domain". https://www.biblio.com/blog/2010/07/how-to-determine-if-a-book-is-in-the-public-domain/

And some more information about what you can do with public domain works https://gatekeeperpress.com/reprinting-and-selling-public-domain-books/

Also, if you're just wanting to read some of those books, here's a link that tells you about entire digital catalogues of free public domain books you can access https://www.vice.com/en/article/kz4e3e/millions-of-books-are-secretly-in-the-public-domain-you-can-download-them-free

So, was looking around for something and stumbled across https://milanote.com/. If you scroll down to the very bottom of the intro screen you can click on templates to see what all they have on offer.  The creative writing looked really interesting for setting up stories and plotting out things, but there's a bunch of other options in there as well. There's a limited free option, not quite sure what they meant by some of the limitations they had listed, but they have paid options that allow you to do more as well.

Hi, everyone! I stumbled across this really neat Youtube channel last night that has a whole bunch of videos that are a combination of background ambient noise combined with music and sometimes rain (like cozy coffee shop w/ jazz music on a rainy day).  Theres' even some holiday ones if you're wanting some nice peaceful instrumental Chrismas music. And most of them run about 8hrs long with apparently no ads to interfere and startle the hell out of you lol.

Hello there!!!

I got a DM from [livejournal.com profile] goneahead who had answered a question in our FAQ about how to count things when you aren't going by a fan fic site that gives you a count. It was suggested that I share those words of wisdom with you all as well as another tool that [livejournal.com profile] goneahead has recently discovered.

Firstly, wordcounter.net was suggested.
i post the fic, then copy all the words and paste them into this word counter wordcounter, it will automatically tally up everything! which not only counts words, but also shows you which words you keep repeating in your fic :)

And then [livejournal.com profile] goneahead found this thing!

I just found a second super helpful tool. I like to use google docs to write , but if you try to paste from google docs to A03, you get a lot of weird coding problems. Well, if you paste from google docs to this tool and then past from this tool to A03, you can fix about 80-85% of the coding problems (and I am assuming it would work for people using word too?)

www.textfixer.com/html/convert-word-to-html

Anyway, I thought I can't be the only one who is being driven nuts by the google docs to AO3 issues, and maybe other people in the comm might be interested?

I know I have issues going from word to AO3 so this looks great. THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] goneahead!!!!!

NaNoWriMo.org hosted a Q&A with 2 editors from one of their sponsors, Swoon Reads. I found it very informative even though YA is not my genre. It was interesting to hear what editors look for, the revising process and how they find new authors. Not just for NaNo folks :-)

I was on Pinterest last week - as I am want to do - and I stumbled across a link to a blog about Beta Reader Ettiquette. It talks about critiquing in a positive and productive way, and then it talks about taking in that critique in a positive and productive way.

I am not kidding you when I say that in the last week I have had three different conversations about this topic. One about what a writer could be looking for from their reader. One about what the reader could be trying to give to their writer. And the last conversation was about finding you find someone you can mesh with. It's a beautiful thing when a writer and reader can make a team. It doesn't always go well, personalities and defenses clash; but when it's good, it's great!

So go read the article. If you are solely a writer or a reader, it may give you a better perspective of the other side of the fence. It's not waffle cheese, but it's still good.

Well, bullsh*t, according to Chuck Wendig.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I really, really struggle with trying to improve.  By nature, I'm a researcher.  So, when I come across a problem I'm having or know there's something I need to improve on, I Google.  The problem with that is, you wind up with so much conflicting information that you don't know what is what.  Or, you find something that sounds so clever, so astute, so on the money that you can't figure out why you never thought of it before.  Then you try and implement it and it all goes to hell in a handbasket.

Sadly, this only makes me doubt myself more, instead of helping me.  Someone shared this link with me today and I think it's a good read.  Funny and inspiring at the same time.  Having read this, I'm feeling 110% better about delving into something I a) haven't ever written before and b) am going to present to someone as a gift sooo... maybe it'll help you, too?  If nothing else, I think you'll get a good laugh out of it.

Writing advice is bullsh*t

So I missed posting this on the weekend, but this week is Asexual Awareness Week, which promotes understanding of asexual, aromantic and demisexual individuals. While I don't personally fall into any of those catagories, I do think awareness of the variety of human conditions is a good thing, both as people in general and as writers.

So, if anyone is interested, this thread is for discussion of asexuality and related tropes in our writing. Prompts, theories about characters, questions, whatever strikes your fancy.

Found this doing the rounds and thought it was something interesting to post - often find myself at a loss or using the same descriptions over and over. Think it will be helpful for people so I wanted to share :)

Edit - Posted this from work, when I get the time I will see if I can find the elusive (Part Two) :D
Edit2 - Found Part Two - now all posted under the cut for size :D

The Organization for Tranformative Works, the good people who bring us AO3 (kudos to them!), are throwing a party celebrating fandom!

That sounds right up our word-loving alley, doesn't it?  :).

The first-ever International Fanworks Day is almost exactly a month out from now: February 15, 2015.  Here's how you can participate...

I am not sure if this will be helpful (or even make sense?) to other poets, but I recently rounded up my thinkee thoughts on editing free verse and posted them over on AO3:

I checked with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] kaige68 if it was okay to mention an online writing club. Suzy Greaves's big writing club is about to start working on The Artists Way. Suzy is a fabulous coach and last year was appointed as editor of the UK's Psychologies magazine. I've worked with her in the past and can't recommend her enough. I've also found the Artists Way very helpful in getting me writing more! There is a cost - it's £19p/m but you can cancel at any point. I don't get anything for the recommendation, but hope someone will find it useful.
This is the link: http://www.suzygreaves.com/the-big-writing-club/ Let me know if you join and if it helps you write more words!

Wanted to share this article I found on Tumblr today. It makes a great argument for fan fiction being taken seriously - and also captures a bit the joys of writing and reading it!

But of course you can change everything what you want, they're really the base for you.  And if you find anything what didn't work, please let me know. If you have any question, I'll try to answer you :)

I know people are busy generally, especially those who have just gone back to school, so I thought I'd ask if anyone would like to volunteer to provide rewards for anyone entering the weekend challenge for the upcoming weekend.

And while we're at it, it's time to bring up the subject generally; see where the land lies, if you will.

We already have a list of rewarders, and in the past I've followed a roster and asked a couple of people each week to see who's available (although not recently as weekend challenge posters have offered their own rewards), but I know we have some new members in recent weeks who may not be aware of how we've been running things. It may be that people don't want rewards any more and would rather just do the weekend challenges if they want without such incentives on offer.

So here's your chance to tell me: do you like rewards? Are you on the rewarders' list and want to opt out? Maybe you'd like to be on it but aren't? Maybe you'd even like to run a weekend challenge and offer all the rewards yourself?

Have your say! You can offer your services or withdraw them (we understand if life's just too busy), or maybe you have other opinions on this you'd like to share and/or discuss. Go for it! ;-)
