So it's probably still Monday where most of you are, so I'll get this party started by telling you that the title of this post* is a couple of lyric lines from a very well-known (in NZ) song that was a smash hit here a million years ago, called "Outlook for Thursday" by DD Smash. The next line seems about right for Tuesday here: "With a wind that chills you to the bone" even though we're in the midst of summer! I believe we are getting La Niña weather pattern this summer, one of the effects of which is "More north-easterly winds blow towards New Zealand, bringing rain to the northeast of the North Island". The rain hasn't hit us too hard yet, but OH BOY, those north-easterly winds are in full gear! Anything loose outside is getting blown across the garden, and it's just not pleasant to be outside in it. *sigh*

I shouldn't complain because I know how tough things are in places like California with the wild fires destroying so much, and the bitter cold and snow in other parts of the USA, but it's hard not to be disappointed in summer here so far! Anyway, I hope everyone you know is safe and well, and that none of our members and friends here have lost anything or anyone to the vagaries of the weather or fires. *hugs*

And now to business! )

I have a book where the main character is in a wheelchair and has been all of his life.
His best friend is Native American.
Its a supernatural story involving angels and demons.
I've been looking for readers who can look at those characters in particular to see how well I have succeeded (or failed) in avoiding negative tropes or stereotypes. I think they're done well, but as I am in neither of those two categories, I'd like outside opinions.

So far I tend to find readers who evaluate sexual orientation and some racial stuff (mostly for black, Asian or Hispanic readers).

If anyone knows of any resources or readers who would be open to critiquing this project, please share them!

Hey everyone!

If anyone has time and access to Dreamwidth — you can use your LJ account if you don't have a DW one — if you could swing by this post and vote for me, I would super appreciate it! Voting ends at 8pm EST on Thursday.

We're down to the final 5 in this season of The Real LJ Idol writing competition, and I need to be in the top 3 to move on.

(I'll be totally fine not moving on, because everyone's entries this week are all really good, but I at least want to tell myself I put up a fight!)

Thanks everyone, and back to your regularly scheduled writing!

I am just about to get to work on the schedule for Weekend Challenge hosts for the 2nd half of 2024, and realise a couple of people who usually sign up haven't yet, which is fine if you can't help, but I thought I would give everyone a chance to jump in if they want.

Please comment here in the next few hours if you're interested in being on the roster and haven't yet let me know. Also let me know any weekends you CAN'T help, and please do so in words for the month (eg "Aug" or "August" not "8") so I don't get confused, as Kiwis (NZers) do our dates the opposite way from the US! ;-) We can manage on who we have, but in case anyone else is keen, let me know in a comment ASAP!

I'm also looking for someone for the next weekend, which includes Sat 17th August, if I have any volunteers? That can be anyone, including those who already signed up. Thanks, Diva! ;-)

My volunteers so far are: [livejournal.com profile] kitmerlot1213, [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600, [livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot, [livejournal.com profile] skargasm, [livejournal.com profile] cmk418, [livejournal.com profile] agdhani and [livejournal.com profile] flipflop_diva.

Thank you!

Hey everyone, I know I've been a bit absent for the last few months, and for that I apologise! I've had quite a lot of family issues to deal with in recent months, but everything seems to have calmed down now, so phew!

Anyhoo, I am here asking for Weekend Challenge volunteers for the next six months. We currently have people scheduled up to the weekend 2-4 August, but nothing beyond that, so if you can commit to anything from 1-4 weekends between August 2024 and January 2025, put your name down here! Let me know how many weekends you would be able to do and any weekends you CAN'T take (please use day in numbers and month in words, because I am from NZ and 2/8/24 means the 2nd August 2024; I don't want to get mixed up because you call that 8/2/24! Thanks!).

I will leave this post open for a while, but I hope to get the new schedule done sometime in the next couple of weeks, so it's ready when the other schedule ends.

Any questions? Ask away! I'll leave it at that, to keep things simple! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
And I'm actually finding some time to post! It's a miracle! I know I am behind with a couple of things; namely I haven't done the January Count yet, nor have I done up the Long Challenge (LC) schedule due to start at the beginning of March - ulp! I need to get on those! The LC will come first, as I need to check my host/s are ready to dive into the next challenge, so a bit of warning is called for!

I am sorry about the count, but I was unexpectedly called out of town for the last week and this meant I didn't do any of the things I'd planned for the last two weekends (and days in between). I'm pleased to say that the cause (my sister was seriously ill) is resolving, as my sister is slowly coming right and should be back to normal in a few weeks, and I am home again! I have to say that TWO 9-hour travel days (driving to her place, and then back again a week later) is not recommended, especially not to older ladies like me! I was exhausted afterwards twice, but still had to do stuff!

Anyway, how are your plans for this week? Obviously, mine revolve around the afore-mentioned LC schedule, but I also hope to get some more icons made, as I was just lamenting to myself how I don't have any specifically for Mondays! If anyone has any other ideas for 1MW-based icons, or in fact any others, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with!

Now, how are the Big Buddies amongst us doing? I suggest you should be at around 65% of your goal for February, and don't forget it's Leap Year, so you have an extra day to get those last words in!

Also don't forget our current Long Challenge, which is Crossovers! [livejournal.com profile] skargasm has been dropping wonderful prompts (and have you seen the awesome graphics included in those posts?) for the duration, so no doubt there will be some more great ideas coming your way before February and the challenge both end! It's not too late to give it a go!

We have all the usual prompts and posts that you see here regularly for your inspiration as well, whether in Crossovers or any other thing you're working on, so don't forget to scroll back or check out the tags if you're stuck - something's bound to nudge you along!

Finally, here is your Flash Challenge for the day: We have Contact! Do what you will with it, 100 words, an icon, or a whole lot more! Link it here so I can praise your inventiveness and wow at the words you made, and then we can all pat you on the back for helping raise the count! ;-)

Other than that, all I can say is my usual, let's be creative out there! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Thank you to everyone who voted in the Long Challenge poll, especially those last minute peeps that I asked especially to help me break the tie!

We have five of our challenges clearly defined!

Here are the five top polled challenges! )

BUT... the problem is I have 2 challenge spaces left and SEVEN challenges that gained 4 votes each. *sigh*

So, rather than me just arbitrarily choosing two of the seven, I am going to give you another poll. If there is another tie, the first two I will look at dropping (from the tie if it happens that way) are Rare Pairs and 5+1, because we had both these challenges last year and it would be really nice to give a couple of the others a chance for a little change! If that doesn't help break any tie, I will be doing a random draw! ;-)

Anyway, vote for the TWO you would most like, and this poll is open to everyone who voted in the last one, and anyone else who wants to have a say... that is perfectly OK. To the polls once again! )

In the meantime, I can announce that [livejournal.com profile] skargasm has kindly offered to run our first long challenge for 2024, which will start on the 15th (next Monday). Drum roll please... and as long as I understand things, the challenge will be... CROSSOVERS! If I have got your choice wrong, Skargasm, please reply to my email and I will amend this post!

This poll will remain open until 6pm Saturday in my timezone (NZDST, which is 18 hours ahead of EST, so that means FRIDAY MIDNIGHT EST). Once I tot up the results, we will have our last two challenges sorted!

THANK YOU, EVERYONE!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey everyone! Here we are on our second Monday of 2024 already! I hope it's going well for you so far. I am working from home all of this week while they do electrical work on our office building, so I am VERY happy, and next week I'm off on holiday! I fly to Christchurch next Sunday to spend a couple of days visiting my two kids and grandson living down there, so that makes me happy! I am driving home again with my son, who is coming back to load up his car with all the things he couldn't fly down there when he moved, and then his father makes the return journey with him driving down via a slightly different route, visits the family, and flies home. Sweet! LF (my son) and I will travel northward slowly over 3 nights and 4 days, visiting my sister for one of the nights (the others in motels) and I am looking forward to it, although hopefully the heat won't be oppressive and my son's car's aircon will work! LOL ;-)

As for this week, bleh, I'll get through some work and try to find time to take down the rest of the Xmas decorations and thank people for the gifts and cards they sent! How is your week shaping up? I hope you get some writing done! I don't have any planned, but I did manage to make 100 icons for the 100-in-100 prompts that K put up at the end of last year. Unfortunately I didn't make them in time for 2023, but I'm using them as my January contributions to the count for this year! I posted 50 of them on my LJ and hope to get the other 50 up before I go away, and get the 2024 count posts up so I can add them in there!

I know I also need to do the final 2023 count (so rush in now to add yours if you haven't already!) and let you all know how we did! In addition, I'm trying to get a volunteer to run our first long challenge for 2024, so if you haven't voted in the poll, nor read the post about the challenges, please go do so NOW! I need to get this one going, STAT! I'm not sure I can get anything up and running before I go away, and we usually start on the 15th Jan, so if you think you can help, I would be very grateful!

So, there are the usual weekly and other regular posts up for the last week; please go and check them out for inspiration! Your flash challenge for this week is: Don't cross swords with me! Give us at least 100 words on that subject and then pat yourself on the back for adding to the count!

Big Buddy peeps, you should be at around 25% of your monthly goal! How's it going? Need help or inspiration? Just ask! We're here for you! And I hope all the daily challengers are going OK too!

I think that's about it for now! Have a great week, everyone! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Yes, it's also that time of year! I'm looking for Weekend Challenge volunteers for the first half of 2024. Well, I say first half, but I really mean the six months from February to July as the current schedule runs to the end of January.

If you're not sure what running a Weekend Challenge involves, but you think you might want to give it a go, don't worry! You can check out previous challenges by hitting the 'weekend: challenge' tab, or you can check out the link on the top left of the comm page on your computer to see the current schedule and the notes there relating to how the challenge works. I am here to help, though, so if you have any questions that doing these two things don't answer, just ask away!

If you do want to volunteer your time, let me know any dates you CAN'T do, any preferences you have, and how many challenges you think you can manage - anything from 1 to 4 is fine, as we don't usually need more than that from anyone in the six months of the schedule.

The other thing you must be able to do is to schedule your own reminders for the dates you are allotted (once the schedule is done), as I am unable to remind you myself. If this means a few weekends get skipped, that's no biggie, but it would be helpful if you can add your own alerts so we don't have too many of these!

THANK YOU, past volunteers, and any new ones! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
It's time to vote for the seven long challenges we'll run between 15th Jan and the end of November!

THE POLL

I'd love to see some of the less popular ones given a go this year, just for something different, but you, the voters, will help make that decision. If you can, vote for one you haven't seen in a while, and three others, be they common or rare!

In all, vote for a maximum of FOUR challenges, please! Preferably ones you plan to be involved in. Note: you can run a challenge and also create for it, in case you wondered!

Here is the poll )

Please let me know if you have any issues with the poll. I will leave it open until the 10th Jan, so get your votes in! I'll be looking for the SEVEN most popular challenges.

RUNNING THE CHALLENGES

I need people to run (or help run) the seven challenges, so the other thing I need you to do is to comment here if you can help. Please let me know what you are willing to do, be it run the whole thing yourself, or help someone else, make bingo cards, create prompts, post daily/weekly updates or whatever. Also, let me know if there are any dates in the year you CAN'T work with for a challenge.

Firstly, though, I need someone who is willing to run the first challenge from the 15th Jan to the end of Feb. If you can do this, I would be grateful, as unfortunately I am going away on the 14th Jan and won't be able to kick things off. If you're that person who feels happy to run ANY challenge, this is a job for you! If there's a particular challenge or challenges you would feel happier running, let me know that, so we can choose the most appropriate one from our seven winners for you to kick the year off with. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] skargasm! Crossovers it is!

CHALLENGE DATES

In case you want to know what dates we use, they are here )

LAST YEAR'S CHALLENGES

In case you want to try voting for different challenges this year but can't remember last year's )

And that's about it! Get your votes in, and don't forget to comment with anything relevant or any questions you may have!

Reminders!

Feb. 3rd, 2023 08:10 am
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi everyone! I love everyone in this bar! I hope to get the January count done in the weekend, so this is a final reminder to anyone who hasn't updated or added their figures to get them in today or tomorrow so they are counted! I really want 2023 to be a great year count-wise for all of us!

The other thing I'd like to mention is just to get everyone to help me out. You will notice an instruction like this in the count posts: Please use the subject line: 'Your Name's Word/Graphic Count 2023' (see mine for example), so that when I get the notifications, I can easily sort them! THANK YOU!

The reason I ask this is because all of your updated comments go to my inbox, and when I'm checking the count, it's so much easier to look at all the 'word' entries at one time and then the 'graphic' entries together, but when there's no 'subject' all the comments look the same and are much more time consuming to sort, as you'll see in this snip of my inbox:

Now, I know I can just go to the entry itself and look at all of them by scrolling down (and this is what I usually do), but I do like keeping the comments until the next month to ensure I've got everyone's count in. I have had people delete their entries and if I hadn't keep their comment a while, I'd have missed their count in the total, which I believe the comm. can have once they've shared it with us, even if they later choose to leave.

It also makes it much easier to see which are doubles when someone reedits more than once in a month (which happens) and you'll see there with Lizet's word count, I can now safely delete the earlier one, and just keep the one comment. So easy when there's a subject, but harder with the generic reply ones which I have looked at but easily get confused as to which is which once read!

So if everyone who isn't 100% sure they put their version of 'Haldoor's Word/Graphic[whichever applies] Count 2023' in the SUBJECT box (rather than the body of the comment or not at all) could go back and check, and then add it if they haven't, this would help me out a WHOLE LOT!

And I apologise to the people I've made an example of in the snip; it just seemed the easiest way to point this out - it's not intended as finger-pointing or a scolding AT ALL. I know how easy it is to miss these things in a long post, or you mean to do it but it just doesn't happen. All I'm doing here is just asking you to help me, as my life seems crazy at the moment, and I know yours probably does too, so if you don't get to it, I am not going to hit you over the head, I promise!!! ;-)
[identity profile] skargasm.livejournal.com
I hope it's okay to post this here. Does anyone have a reliable and free image hosting site? I currently use Imgur but realised that if it goes the way of Photobucket, I don't have a reliable back up. I have signed up to Flickr but can't seem to figure out how to grab the images to use in my fics, etc.

Am I just being a dumb-ass? Is there a dummies guide anywhere please?
[identity profile] jujukittychick.livejournal.com
If I need to delete this, just let me know, but...help? lol

I am doing a rare pair trope a day challenge this month, you guys have seen a couple of the results of this already.  The rare pair bit is killing me though because I don't normally write for them.   Here's the link to the master post for this thing.  Basically, I'm looking for pairing suggestions for the different prompts starting with 18. I generally write M/M but *shrug* I'm willing to consider M/F or F/F.

Kill me now... )

Thanks! I know you guys are all hella busy right now :)
[identity profile] kaige68.livejournal.com
Hello there!!!

I got a DM from [livejournal.com profile] goneahead who had answered a question in our FAQ about how to count things when you aren't going by a fan fic site that gives you a count. It was suggested that I share those words of wisdom with you all as well as another tool that [livejournal.com profile] goneahead has recently discovered.

Firstly, wordcounter.net was suggested.
i post the fic, then copy all the words and paste them into this word counter wordcounter, it will automatically tally up everything! which not only counts words, but also shows you which words you keep repeating in your fic :)

And then [livejournal.com profile] goneahead found this thing!

I just found a second super helpful tool. I like to use google docs to write , but if you try to paste from google docs to A03, you get a lot of weird coding problems. Well, if you paste from google docs to this tool and then past from this tool to A03, you can fix about 80-85% of the coding problems (and I am assuming it would work for people using word too?)

www.textfixer.com/html/convert-word-to-html

Anyway, I thought I can't be the only one who is being driven nuts by the google docs to AO3 issues, and maybe other people in the comm might be interested?

I know I have issues going from word to AO3 so this looks great. THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] goneahead!!!!!

I so have not written for a long time, though now I want to get back with my writing. I thinking to take up one of my wip stories Thousand and one night, my take of Arabians night. Also hope to work on it during next month when it Nanowrimo. So here comes what I would like to have help from you of, that you can see the weeks to 1 November (or longer) as an extra challenge for you too.

In my story I use actor/actress name like, Orlando Bloom, Christian Bale, Leonardo Dicaprio, David Caruso and so on (of couse women also), so you can take the one you like ... Actually I made a post in my journal about it HERE so go there and read about it.
When I started the story, which now a few years ago (around 6-8 years) I wasn't into many of the new tv-series, films so there are a lot people I could think about then there is welcome. (As series such Hawaii 5 0, Fantastic Beast, Swat, Librarians(?) or what are popular now).

If your favourite, favourite is taken of someone else... I'm sure you would have someone else to chose, as there are so many to chose from, and I would not want two of the same.
If you want to count the words and get really into the challenge is to make up/write the story they are telling. Do you see it as complete I will put you up as a co write for that one and not change it. That is atleast what I can do.

Preferable is that you leave the comment at my entry, though here is good too. Now in the beginning I can be late to reply/comment, but I will come. And if you missed it... the reward from me will be the chapters your chose has come to. I have a few planed and will start working on. Hopefully I will get into writing again and also help to reach the groups goal for the year.

Someone on the FB NaNoWriMo page posted a link to this site: https://www.daz3d.com/
It creates 3D characters. It has tons of features (I only used the free ones) and takes some getting used to...but tinkering with it is very addictive.
So I spent about 9 hours yesterday learning some of its features and creating these two shots of my NaNoWriMo MC. He's not dressed accurately, since I could only go with free stuff, but its close enough :)

Since its graphics related AND NaNo related AND related to my next book, I'm counting it ;)

I know I've left it a bit late as our schedule for the first half of 2018 has just run out, but please sign in here with a comment if you'd like to run one or more Weekend Challenges between now and the first weekend in January 2019! I will run one for the upcoming weekend (unless someone has a burning desire to do it?), but thereafter, all weekends are up for grabs!

If you've never done it before, check out the 'weekend: challenge' tag for ideas on how it works, or see the link to the last weekend challenge schedule at the top left on the main page of the comm.

If you volunteer, please let me know any dates that WON'T work for you, and if you can do one or more weekends.

Thank you!

I'll be doing the count tonight, in case anyone wants to know - I'm currently still at the orifice and can't see my spreadsheet here - so apologies if you were expecting it already by now!

OK, I'm getting this one in quickly. I have [livejournal.com profile] fairyniamh down for the coming weekend (I emailed you, Fairy, so just let me know!), but I need volunteers to run the challenge for the first half of the year, so sign up here!

In your comment, let me know:
1/ How many weekends you can manage
2/ any dates/periods you CANNOT take

If you need any help deciding, or don't have a clue what running one will take, ask any questions here in a comment!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
It's time to start thinking about next year! I know it's busy for most people right now, but even if you are a lurker, we want your opinion! There are no wrong answers, and no shame no matter how you answer here. I am leaving the results open to everyone, so all I ask is that if you are going to comment about anything or to anyone, be as nice as you usually are, as we're just wanting this to be a great place for everyone to feel safe, no matter how silly they think what they're suggesting is!

[livejournal.com profile] kaige68 and I are probably going to need more help next year, as we have both been distracted away at times this year, and we really want to keep this comm going if people are enjoying what it provides and want to keep it alive. We probably only need a few people, but think seriously about whether you can reliably offer your time before answering the mod question, as we really don't want gaps in posting, although obviously we're pretty relaxed on the whole and no-one gets in trouble for forgetting or being late with anything! ;-)

To the poll! )

That's it for now. I'll leave this open till Dec 26th, and we'll post about where we go from here after that, when I at least will hopefully have more time...

And in case I forget later in the week, MERRY CHRISTMAS, SEASON'S GREETINGS, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS, however and whatever you celebrate at this time of year! ;-)
