Hello, everyone, and welcome to the 2020 post for beta-readers. This replaces the 2017 version, as I'm not sure how many people on that page are still offering beta-reading.

If you are available to beta fic for others, this is the place to comment with a note of what you're happy to help with, for example: fandom, a read-thru for basic errors, grammar/spelling/punctuation, Brit-picking (or other cultures), characterisation, plot, etc. I won't reply to your comments, then if you wish to edit/add to anything, you can do this at any time.

Anyone looking for a beta can refer to this post and PM any of the commenters if they see one who is offering something that matches their need. Failing that, you can post here asking for help, but you run the risk of not being answered directly by members - I will see it and can direct people here, but that is not as efficient as a direct PM.

BETA-READING INFO

It's okay for a beta to say no if they're busy or feel unable to help someone. For those of you here looking for beta help, you can always try someone else on the list if your first choice is unable to beta for you.

Remember, a beta is trying to help make a story better; they're not meant to be criticising the writer. Every suggestion to alter the story in any way is simply a SUGGESTION and the writer can accept or disregard that suggestion as they see fit. If you can't take concrit, be sure to tell the beta exactly what it is you want from their help before you get started. And betas, if a writer doesn't take your suggestions, don't take it to heart; it's their story and their choice what they use or don't use of your concrit.

You all know this comm. by now, and how we like to encourage our members; so please remember that if you can't be pleasant, please bow out nicely - from either end is acceptable - and that should be the end of it. Your mods are here if there are any issues, but if you remember to treat others as you would like to be treated, then we shouldn't have to be involved.

Thanks, guys, and let's get some beta-reading done!

Hello members! You are tracking wonderfully well - I just checked out our Feb figures! - so YAY all of you!

It has been pointed out that we have some out-of-date links to the top left of the comm, and I'm on a mission to fix those that our fearless leader [livejournal.com profile] kaige68 hasn't already dealt to.

I've got the 2016 brag book sorted, and in so doing realised that not much bragging has happened, so if anyone who missed it at the time wants to tell us what they are most proud of from 2016, please do pop into this link and let us know where to find your best creations now! And, as I say, the link is permanently on the main page of the comm, so you can still visit later if you haven't got time right now.

The other thing I need to update is the weekend challenge schedule for this year, and that is my job for this weekend, so watch the link change from Weekend Challenge Schedule 2016 to Weekend Challenge Schedule 2017 sometime in the next few days!

Finally, I'm thinking that since the Rewards and Beta Readers posts date from our first year (2013! This is our fifth year, can you believe?), I will put up some new posts for them over the weekend too, and get anyone who wants to, to re-sign in on them, or indeed sign up for the first time! That way we will have a more up to date list of who is offering what, since some of our members whom I see on those older posts have become quieter of late and I'm not sure that they are all still interested in beta reading or helping out with rewards.

If you have any thoughts on anything I've mentioned today, or want to ask about/point out anything I've touched on, please feel free to comment here!

I need someone to look at my Swap of Joy fic, please and thank you. It's just under 2000 words and I mostly need it read for continuity and obvious typos.  Punctuation and grammar checks are always welcome, too.

Thanks in advance to anyone who offers themselves up for sacrifce, um, service.  Yeah.  Service.

Hi all.

I hope it's OK to post this here. If you can help me, please reply.

The only muse I can currently hear clearly is for Blue Bloods. I am a Jamie/Edie shipper. As every JAMKO fan knows we have all been squee-ing loudly since last week's kiss. I have written most of a coda FF for Personal Business but would love for somebody to review it. Those two kids did not go willingly into the bedroom. I want to make sure it's not too contrived so I'd really prefer help from somebody who watches the show. But at this point, anybody who can spell & has a clue about what descent dialogue sounds like would be a blessing.

In a effort to relocate my H50 muse I signed up for Swap of Joy. Haldoor then informed me I am required to have a beta. Anybody wanna help out a McDanno lover?

Thanks in advance for any assist.

I was on Pinterest last week - as I am want to do - and I stumbled across a link to a blog about Beta Reader Ettiquette. It talks about critiquing in a positive and productive way, and then it talks about taking in that critique in a positive and productive way.

I am not kidding you when I say that in the last week I have had three different conversations about this topic. One about what a writer could be looking for from their reader. One about what the reader could be trying to give to their writer. And the last conversation was about finding you find someone you can mesh with. It's a beautiful thing when a writer and reader can make a team. It doesn't always go well, personalities and defenses clash; but when it's good, it's great!

So go read the article. If you are solely a writer or a reader, it may give you a better perspective of the other side of the fence. It's not waffle cheese, but it's still good.

I have stayed largely away from the use of betas beside myself and my darling soul mate for the simple reason I've gotten into some rather ugly situations in the ficdom world on other sites. I'm sure we have all experienced them, even, sadly, some on LJ. That being said, I am really wanting to grow as a writer and have signed up to write some bangs this year.

One restriction that's kept me away from joining them before now (besides the word count -- I'm so used to doing short one-shots) is that some of them require a beta. I've finished my first one, read it through several times, but although the comm doesn't necessarily require a beta, I find I still want my fic to look and read its best when presented. I've really poured some love into this story.

If this works out, and I hope it does, I'll be looking for other betas in the future for other fandoms, but this particular story is centered on Catwoman and is slightly over ten thousand words long. What I'm looking for in a beta is some one to catch any loopholes I may have accidentally left, as well as grammar, correct spelling, sentence structure, that sort of thing. So if you're a Catwoman fan with time, and especially if you love animals as the story does center pretty largely on cats as well, and would like to help, please let me know.

I'll also be more than happy to beta anything you may have need of a second pair of eyes overlooking if I know the fandom. :-)

*releases breath*

PS: I just want to "say" also that I chose this comm within which to start my search, because we really do have some wonderful members and mods here. I honestly don't expect any ugliness to arise from anybody here. :) But it's still hard to ask! LOL

I just signed up for a Tiny / Mini Bang (up to 5,000 words) and I need a Beta Reader.

The story will be about my bb Wanda Maximoff (MCU).

I mostly need somebody to look over my English (grammar and translation mistakes) because English isn't my first language and this Bang is in English.

Anybody?! :o)

I've never worked with a beta before (shocking and probably horrible I know) so please feel free to comment/PM me if something needs clarifying.

I've got a WIP that I'd like to complete during the 12 days of WIPness Currently it is at about 6500 words but will likely get a lot shorter.

Details for those that might be interested/able to help )

Is anybody willing to be my Beta-Reader?

I noticed that I'm really not that good in translating a story in English. Mostly this happens when I write a story in German first. The last time I wrote a story in English only it was much easier for me. But the other way around just don't work. :o(

So any help with the English grammar and phrases would be really awesome. dict.leo.org isn't good with this. And it's the only page I have...

Mostly I write about Wanda Maximoff (MCU). So Spoilers sometimes happen. But there is always a Warning. :o)

I will also start watching tv shows / movies in English now. Just to get a feeling for English again. But also some suggestions for shows / movies that are easy to understand would be awesome here. :o) I once watched "NCIS" or "Interstellar" in English but this was really not easy. ^^ So any suggestion here would be awesome. Thanks.

Hey all!

I've been trying to get back into writing, so before returning to my long-term K/S fanfic (that I've definitely not given up on!) I've gone and written an M rated Jack Harkness/Steve Rogers fic (set after the latest Thor movie and after the last episode of Doctor Who). The Avengers are tasked by S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture Harkness, but Steve knew him during the war.

Eeeeek... I'd really appreciate another pair of eyes though!

I can't tell any more if it flows well at all. And maybe someone needs to proof my attempts at writing American accents?! Steve was hard to write! XD I'm also relatively new to the Avenger's universe, though I did try to do my research with Google ;) .

It's just under 10 000 words.

Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who might be able to help me out here!

Thought I'd throw out an open ask since I know what weekends can be like. I've finished my fic for the weekend challenge, but I would appreciate another set of eyes. It's Teen Wolf, just over 2100 words, gen, and the spelling and grammar should be just an easy check (I'm usually good at that). What I really need is someone to tell if it flows okay and makes sense. I loved the idea, but now that it's been executed, I'm afraid something got lost in translation. So, definitely need a second opinion.

I know our lovely mods are working on a beta list, which is awesome! But I don't think it's quite ready yet so I'm just going to throw this out to the comm at large.

Anyone have time to beta a short (about 1500 words) Teen Wolf gen fic? It's a convo between Stiles and the Sheriff and I'm in need of general comma wrangling (I tend to use too many) and spell checking. Also, an honest critique on whether it works, please.

Beta List!

Sorry I've been slow to get this together, but here is the list of members who are willing to beta fic:

[livejournal.com profile] amaryllisssa
[livejournal.com profile] heffermonkey
[livejournal.com profile] siluria

All of the above beta readers have commented to this post with what they're happy to help with in terms of fandom, read-thru for basic errors, grammar/spelling/punctuation, characterisation, plot, etc.

Anyone looking for a beta can refer to this list and PM any of the above betas if they need some help with something.

It's okay for a beta to say no if they're busy or feel unable to help someone. For those of you here looking for beta help, you can always try someone else on the list if someone's unable to help you.

Hey everyone, how's your weekend going? It's wet and wild over here in Auckland right now, and I should be doing a million other things, but why do all of those when [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words is calling out so loudly to me? I'm even ignoring the grumpy husband who clearly thinks I'm very lazy

So, who needs a beta? Who betas? Who'd like to beta? Anyone up for joining the newest comm list? )

In other mod news, I have been through every entry in the comm today and added tags where there were none. I've added a couple of new tags and I've renamed a couple just to keep them in line with our other tags. There aren't too many of them altogether, but they are useful for helping us find posts that may be of use or that we want to refer back to.

So can I just remind everyone to please tag your entry if you are posting in the comm from now on.

If you aren't sure what tag to use, have a look at the list and choose one that seems relevant. if nothing seems right, use either 'help!' or 'thinky-thoughts', or if you really believe the tag will be useful again, please feel free to suggest a new one! We're open-minded here and in fact I now want to add 'kinky thoughts' to tags, just because I can!, so don't be afraid!

Oh, and a few suggestions re the new ones I created which are: 'creation: fic' and 'creation: image'. These are for when you post about a fic or image you've created. Please use them whether it's a link to elsewhere or it's directly posted here; I didn't want to make too many, hence one only for each type at this point. Also, if your creation is inspired by or in response to a challenge or regular feature here, please use the appropriate tag on it in addition to the creation tag (eg: 2 tags - 'creation: fic', 'weekend: challenge' or 'creation: fic', 'daily: word of the day').

Now... anything else? Do you have any questions for your mods today?

And I finish by saying you are all amazing! I can't believe how well we've done in only four months! We've far surpassed what [livejournal.com profile] kaige68 and I imagined when we she started this little comm. Keep it up, everyone, for you are the best and we are both so very proud of you!

Betas

I saw the discussion on this and meant to reply at the time, but then life happened. However, it did move me to make this post so...

I haven't seen this mentioned on the comm (I may have just missed it; I'm really good at that) and I was wondering if there is a list of beta readers. I know that I've used one probably for every fic (other than drabbles) that I've ever written. I'm my own worst critic and I'll scrap the whole damn thing if someone isn't there to stop the madness. :) But over the years, my primary beta has become swamped with work and doesn't beta anymore and my secondary beta is almost as busy and doesn't read in the fandoms I write in anymore. Now that's a not huge problem if I just want hand holding and a spell checker. It doesn't work out so well if I'm pondering canon things.

So, how do you all go about getting a beta?
[identity profile] kaige68.livejournal.com
It’s a serious question, and there are a number of things that factor into a writer’s decision making.
So let me ask you some questions. )
[identity profile] heffermonkey.livejournal.com
To look over my Spring Fling fic for me. Just need someone to spot the mistakes as it were, give it a good poke and see what needs to be added or taken away.

For an idea of what it's about, the prompt I chose was -

Prompt : Surrogate Danny gets accidentally inseminated with Steve's sperm even though Steve specifically asked for a female surrogate. By the time they realize about the mix up, Danny is already pregnant. Throw in meddling friends and family too.

- so, any takers? It's about 20,000 words, Danny/Steve with some NC17 scenes towards the end.
[identity profile] amaryllisssa.livejournal.com
I'm looking for a beta next week for my WIP. It is Hawaii Five-0, probably going to be around 12,000 words. It has become more complex and plotty than I originally intended, so would much appreciate another pair of eyes, or even two pairs!

Beta?
