[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
So it's probably still Monday where most of you are, so I'll get this party started by telling you that the title of this post* is a couple of lyric lines from a very well-known (in NZ) song that was a smash hit here a million years ago, called "Outlook for Thursday" by DD Smash. The next line seems about right for Tuesday here: "With a wind that chills you to the bone" even though we're in the midst of summer! I believe we are getting La NiƱa weather pattern this summer, one of the effects of which is "More north-easterly winds blow towards New Zealand, bringing rain to the northeast of the North Island". The rain hasn't hit us too hard yet, but OH BOY, those north-easterly winds are in full gear! Anything loose outside is getting blown across the garden, and it's just not pleasant to be outside in it. *sigh*

I shouldn't complain because I know how tough things are in places like California with the wild fires destroying so much, and the bitter cold and snow in other parts of the USA, but it's hard not to be disappointed in summer here so far! Anyway, I hope everyone you know is safe and well, and that none of our members and friends here have lost anything or anyone to the vagaries of the weather or fires. *hugs*

And now to business! )

It's time to pick the long challenges for 2025! Firstly, though, I have decided that as it is the 15th already where I am, that I will get us started this year, and I've picked an easy one: WIP Push! This is a popular one, because it give us a chance to pick up something we've already started and do our best to get it finished before the challenge period ends. I'll post properly about this soon.

Now it's time to vote for the other six long challenges we'll run between the 1st March and the end of November this year. Please keep in mind which ones we did last year, and if you want to challenge yourself, try voting for something different! Of course, I know we have some that are more popular than others, so feel free to vote for a couple you love to take part in, and then try voting for a couple you've never had a go at!

Get under the cut and vote! )
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Thank you to everyone who voted in the Long Challenge poll, especially those last minute peeps that I asked especially to help me break the tie!

We have five of our challenges clearly defined!

Here are the five top polled challenges! )

BUT... the problem is I have 2 challenge spaces left and SEVEN challenges that gained 4 votes each. *sigh*

So, rather than me just arbitrarily choosing two of the seven, I am going to give you another poll. If there is another tie, the first two I will look at dropping (from the tie if it happens that way) are Rare Pairs and 5+1, because we had both these challenges last year and it would be really nice to give a couple of the others a chance for a little change! If that doesn't help break any tie, I will be doing a random draw! ;-)

Anyway, vote for the TWO you would most like, and this poll is open to everyone who voted in the last one, and anyone else who wants to have a say... that is perfectly OK. To the polls once again! )

In the meantime, I can announce that [livejournal.com profile] skargasm has kindly offered to run our first long challenge for 2024, which will start on the 15th (next Monday). Drum roll please... and as long as I understand things, the challenge will be... CROSSOVERS! If I have got your choice wrong, Skargasm, please reply to my email and I will amend this post!

This poll will remain open until 6pm Saturday in my timezone (NZDST, which is 18 hours ahead of EST, so that means FRIDAY MIDNIGHT EST). Once I tot up the results, we will have our last two challenges sorted!

THANK YOU, EVERYONE!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey everyone! Here we are on our second Monday of 2024 already! I hope it's going well for you so far. I am working from home all of this week while they do electrical work on our office building, so I am VERY happy, and next week I'm off on holiday! I fly to Christchurch next Sunday to spend a couple of days visiting my two kids and grandson living down there, so that makes me happy! I am driving home again with my son, who is coming back to load up his car with all the things he couldn't fly down there when he moved, and then his father makes the return journey with him driving down via a slightly different route, visits the family, and flies home. Sweet! LF (my son) and I will travel northward slowly over 3 nights and 4 days, visiting my sister for one of the nights (the others in motels) and I am looking forward to it, although hopefully the heat won't be oppressive and my son's car's aircon will work! LOL ;-)

As for this week, bleh, I'll get through some work and try to find time to take down the rest of the Xmas decorations and thank people for the gifts and cards they sent! How is your week shaping up? I hope you get some writing done! I don't have any planned, but I did manage to make 100 icons for the 100-in-100 prompts that K put up at the end of last year. Unfortunately I didn't make them in time for 2023, but I'm using them as my January contributions to the count for this year! I posted 50 of them on my LJ and hope to get the other 50 up before I go away, and get the 2024 count posts up so I can add them in there!

I know I also need to do the final 2023 count (so rush in now to add yours if you haven't already!) and let you all know how we did! In addition, I'm trying to get a volunteer to run our first long challenge for 2024, so if you haven't voted in the poll, nor read the post about the challenges, please go do so NOW! I need to get this one going, STAT! I'm not sure I can get anything up and running before I go away, and we usually start on the 15th Jan, so if you think you can help, I would be very grateful!

So, there are the usual weekly and other regular posts up for the last week; please go and check them out for inspiration! Your flash challenge for this week is: Don't cross swords with me! Give us at least 100 words on that subject and then pat yourself on the back for adding to the count!

Big Buddy peeps, you should be at around 25% of your monthly goal! How's it going? Need help or inspiration? Just ask! We're here for you! And I hope all the daily challengers are going OK too!

I think that's about it for now! Have a great week, everyone! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
It's time to vote for the seven long challenges we'll run between 15th Jan and the end of November!

THE POLL

I'd love to see some of the less popular ones given a go this year, just for something different, but you, the voters, will help make that decision. If you can, vote for one you haven't seen in a while, and three others, be they common or rare!

In all, vote for a maximum of FOUR challenges, please! Preferably ones you plan to be involved in. Note: you can run a challenge and also create for it, in case you wondered!

Here is the poll )

Please let me know if you have any issues with the poll. I will leave it open until the 10th Jan, so get your votes in! I'll be looking for the SEVEN most popular challenges.

RUNNING THE CHALLENGES

I need people to run (or help run) the seven challenges, so the other thing I need you to do is to comment here if you can help. Please let me know what you are willing to do, be it run the whole thing yourself, or help someone else, make bingo cards, create prompts, post daily/weekly updates or whatever. Also, let me know if there are any dates in the year you CAN'T work with for a challenge.

Firstly, though, I need someone who is willing to run the first challenge from the 15th Jan to the end of Feb. If you can do this, I would be grateful, as unfortunately I am going away on the 14th Jan and won't be able to kick things off. If you're that person who feels happy to run ANY challenge, this is a job for you! If there's a particular challenge or challenges you would feel happier running, let me know that, so we can choose the most appropriate one from our seven winners for you to kick the year off with. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] skargasm! Crossovers it is!

CHALLENGE DATES

In case you want to know what dates we use, they are here )

LAST YEAR'S CHALLENGES

In case you want to try voting for different challenges this year but can't remember last year's )

And that's about it! Get your votes in, and don't forget to comment with anything relevant or any questions you may have!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi everyone! We had a great year of long challenges in 2022, so let's see how we can do with 2023!

To get us started, since we usually kick off the first one from the 15th, I've unilaterally decided (with K's approval *wink*) that our first long challenge for 2023 is a WIP Push, and I'll be kicking that off in a few days, so if you have any suggestions for that, let me know in a comment here. This WIP challenge will run from 15 Jan to 28 Feb.

to the poll! )

Reminders!

Jan. 13th, 2022 11:19 am
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi everyone, please remember to vote in our 2022 Long Challenge Poll as soon as you can!

I want to get something kicked off for our first long challenge asap as it should be starting on 16 Jan. The three current front-runners in the poll are Bingo, Pool Party and Songfic, so we'll probably use one of these for the 16 Jan to 28 Feb challenge, and I may just pick Songfic, as it hasn't been used as a challenge here since... I can't remember, so it's wonderful to suddenly see it being so popular! Time for a change, I feel! ;-)

Anyway, if you've got thoughts about helping run this particular challenge and you're keen to kick it off on 16 Jan, let me know in comments here!

As for the rest, please vote! I need to break a tie, and decided if we're going to run a few of the low voted challenges as a side to some of the more popular ones. Only 16 people have voted so far, and I know we have more people who would like to play! ;-)

Also, don't forget to let me know if you want to volunteer to run a Weekend Challenge (or 2-3), at the linked post! I want to try and get the roster up a bit quicker than I have in recent years, so by the end of Friday would be great! ;-)

PS: I haven't forgotten we need new counters for 2022, either. I aim to get these up on Sunday my time (Sat. for most parts of the USA).
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey, everyone, it's time to look forward to this year's long challenges! And we want your input! I have listed most of the long challenges we have had in the past, although I've left out Advent and Swap of Joy, as well as 100-in-100 as these are ones we're likely to run in some form or another in December.

Long challenges generally run for six weeks each, starting from Jan 16th, which means we have room for seven of them before December. Please vote for as many as you like, but aim for a minimum of three and preferably no more than seven, and try to vote for ones you would like to take part in. There is no requirement to take part in them, by the way, but it would be great if you could!

If you don't know a particular challenge, try checking out the appropriate tag for samples and/or explanations of each one, though I will point out that we never actually used video games, so if you have a brilliant idea on how to run this one, please do vote for it and tell us about it in the comments.

To the poll! )

The other thing I'd love to hear from you is whether you can help run any of the long challenges, and if there are any dates you cannot help out in, so we can roster them. You can run these alone or with another person who is also interested, and we'll pair you up if you show interest, so don't worry! We will also support you in any way you need while you're in charge!

If anyone's up for running our first challenge, which will be from 16 Jan to 28 Feb, let us know in a comment (and you may be able to choose the challenge too if it looks popular enough), then we'll get you on it ASAP!

Finally, if you have any NEW ideas for a long challenge and want a chance to run it, tell us about that in the comments too!

I'll leave the poll open for three days, and then we'll look at deciding which are the most popular in terms of participants and people who will run them. Thank you all!

Hello there!
I'm trying to plan some year end pushes.
Let us know if you are interested in these events this year!
It's not either or, we can do both.  Chime in and let us know!

[Poll #2114971]
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Time for a poll to tell us how we are doing and what things you'd like to see in 2021.

Pop under the cut to take the poll )

Check out the tags if you need to know what the challenges are about before voting. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions; we'll answer as best we can! And if you want to suggest anything new to any of these lists, we are all for it - comment away! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey everyone! We're thinking about getting organised for 2020, and would like your thoughts on what content we should have here at the comm. I've put together a poll, so if you can fill it out by midnight Friday 27th Dec PST, that would help us a lot. And if you have any comments to make or questions to ask about anything at the comm, please do so here! We want your input!

Poll under here! )

K and I would also like to thank all of you who have been involved with the comm this year; we really appreciate you hanging out with us and making this such a great place to be. We wish you all the best over the festive season too! ;-)

PS: I've emailed everyone who is a member of the comm to remind you to fill out the poll, but I missed copying the link here, and have had issues trying to send another group email, so apologies for that.
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
This poll will be open for TWENTY-FOUR hours only, as we need to get onto collecting pictures!

Please vote for ANY & ALL fandoms you'd consider writing and/or making graphics for this month; I want to include as many of you as possible, and knowing which fandoms you'd actually create for will help with this.

[Poll #2094629]
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
[Poll #2087348]

Let me know if there are any issues with the poll.

Please let me know in comments what your favourite challenges are; which ones you might help with; like to see more/less of; ALL THE THINGS! Also, feel free to ask questions or suggest new challenges. WE NEED TO KNOW!!!

PS: RIP Steven Hillenberg (creator of Spongebob). Much sadness at our house.

ALSO: REMINDER!!! I'll be counting at the weekend, so GET THOSE NUMBERS UPDATED!!!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
It's time to start thinking about next year! I know it's busy for most people right now, but even if you are a lurker, we want your opinion! There are no wrong answers, and no shame no matter how you answer here. I am leaving the results open to everyone, so all I ask is that if you are going to comment about anything or to anyone, be as nice as you usually are, as we're just wanting this to be a great place for everyone to feel safe, no matter how silly they think what they're suggesting is!

[livejournal.com profile] kaige68 and I are probably going to need more help next year, as we have both been distracted away at times this year, and we really want to keep this comm going if people are enjoying what it provides and want to keep it alive. We probably only need a few people, but think seriously about whether you can reliably offer your time before answering the mod question, as we really don't want gaps in posting, although obviously we're pretty relaxed on the whole and no-one gets in trouble for forgetting or being late with anything! ;-)

To the poll! )

That's it for now. I'll leave this open till Dec 26th, and we'll post about where we go from here after that, when I at least will hopefully have more time...

And in case I forget later in the week, MERRY CHRISTMAS, SEASON'S GREETINGS, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS, however and whatever you celebrate at this time of year! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
I'm a little later than planned with the poll, but here it is at last!

Go under the cut and vote for up to FIVE fandoms that you would consider playing with for August Rush this year! I will leave the poll open until midnight Saturday, PST, or thereabouts, so get your votes in ASAP!

Those of you who have offered to help find graphics or who supplied links to sites with screenshots, thank you! I'll be in touch where necessary once the final fandoms are chosen!

Choose up to FIVE fandoms altogether from the following two 'questions', please! )

Please let me know if there are any problems with the poll! Oh, and if you have comments/questions about specifics within a fandom on the list, please share them here.
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Here is the poll for August Rush! There are TWO questions in the poll:

For the first, please tick as many fandoms as you like - but please make sure they are ones you would personally play in for August Rush! This does not mean you have to use all of them in the challenge, it just means I will be better able to be sure everyone gets at least one fandom they like in the final choice.

For the second, these are fandoms we have played with before for August Rush, so I would ask that only vote if you really do want something from here ABOVE anything from the previous question. Please only vote for the ONE fandom you want the most. (The reasoning behind this is that a fandom from here will only be chosen for the challenge if there is not a clear-cut set of 5-6 fandoms from the first question, AND one of the fandoms here out-performs the most popular fandoms in the first question. We really want to stretch ourselves and cater to new fandoms every year for August Rush if we can).

To the polls! )

Only I will see who voted for what fandoms, but you will all see the final numbers. I'll leave the poll open until Friday night PST, and on Sunday I will announce the fandoms for the Rush! We will be a little late starting because I am not organised (!!!), but I will be in touch with those who offered to help ASAP after the poll closes. We will aim to start on Wednesday 3rd August, or before if at all possible, but I will keep you all informed.
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Here is the place to complete the poll and to comment regarding your ability to help out with anything we do here at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words.

EDIT: I apologise but this post will not work with the poll. I'll repost it in a NEW POST which I have linked here.

Please still comment in this post with anything you're willing to help with.

And if you are willing to help with any of the items polled, please comment in the appropriate thread below, using the form shown. Also note that some of the regular things we do already have someone running them, but they will comment to you if they would like additional help or would like to pass the item on to you fully, should you show an interest in one of these. Don't feel discouraged if they want to keep it; we have a lot of other things you can help with! Do comment in as many threads as necessary if you want to help with more than one thing. Thank you!

[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Finally, I am able to post the poll to vote for the fandoms you want featured in this year's August Rush challenge. Anyone who wants to play with the graphics we'll have on offer in August (you can make words or pictures), please step under the cut and vote for your TOP FIVE. Please don't vote for more than this, as this will skew the final vote (less is fine if you only have a couple of choices, but if you want to try a new fandom, this is the perfect time!).

August Rush Poll! )

The poll will be open until Wednesday 23 July

So, you have a week to get your votes in!
[identity profile] scraplove.livejournal.com
So it's February! Crossovers this month! I'm super excited, because I basically cross things over in my head constantly every time I'm in a new fandom. I've always got AUs bouncing around in there. But here's my problem: I've got roughly 15 ideas in there right now, and there's no way I can write them all before the end of February.

So I was hoping some kind people would be willing to take a look at a poll I made on my LJ with all of my crossover ideas (at least, the ones I could remember), and vote on which ones sound interesting. I still can't share any writing, but I would really appreciate the push! The poll is here. Thanks in advance!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hello! I'm here today to announce a new graphics challenge that will be running through October and November! It's a Calendar Challenge, and this means [livejournal.com profile] galadriel34 and I will be asking you to help us make one or more calendars for everyone at the comm to use in 2014, should they so wish!

First up, we're asking for volunteers - if you would like to be part of this challenge, check out the info below the cut and sign up here! )
