I don’t know about you, but I regularly struggle with the characters taking my ideas, tossing them into the trash, and setting fire to them.  Laughing as they watch me cry because they refuse to cooperate.

I should probably preface this by saying that I am not a plotter.  When I start a story, I usually have a pretty good idea where we’re starting and some vague idea of how I want it to end.  This leaves me without any clear idea of how to get from beginning to end.

And this gives my characters entirely too much wiggle room sometimes.

Does this ever happen to you?  Do you have a particularly unruly character that is constantly going off the rails?  How do you rein them back in – or do you?

For me, there are two.  Zayne Reyes is the obvious answer and H is laughing right now because of it.  He’s unpredictable by nature and even though he’s a creation of my own, there are times when I find myself screaming, “GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW, WE WERE HAVING A DISCUSSION!”  Like he’s a toddler in a toy store.  Sometimes, it’s best to let him run and others I send the other two boys out to drag him back.

The other is Travis Murphy.  Like Zayne, he can be unpredictable (he is a writer after all), but more often than not, it’s his way of looking at things that causes a traffic jam in my writing.  He’ll say or do something that makes me look at what I’m writing in a completely different light.  Murphy, I let run free.  He’s harmless (unlike that crazy Texan) and things usually turn out better when I listen to him.

Honorable mention: Andrej Zeklos.  His level of tolerance and vast wells of patience often surprise me.  Zayne ought to be thankful because often Andy’s goodwill is the only thing keeping him alive.

What about you?  Do you have a character that refuses to play by the rules or is it just random offenders?  How do you handle it when they don’t want to cooperate?

Happy almost March, guys!

It's time for another Original Fic post! How are all our orig fic writers doing? This month I thought I'd ask if any of you would like to share something you'd written with us, be it full story, chapter or small excerpt.

no title

And as a question for discussion, I'd like to ask if you use a beta reader for your own stories or do you post as is, that is if you're posting fic. If you're aiming for publication, do you test your fic out on readers, have a beta reader, or just send it off to publishers? perhaps you do something else entirely? Also, what do you expect from a beta reader in original fic - the same sort of concrit/catching of typos/spelling, grammar & punctuation advice you'd expect from fandom beta readers, or something different altogether?

I've just posted the latest chapter of my currently ongoing orig WIP - info and link under the cut )

So c'mon out, anyone who writes or would like to write orig fic; this is your safe place! And I'd just like to offer up a general reminder to all our members here, though I know most of you are already on board with this: please remember that no criticism should be offered unless you have a constructive comment on how it could be fixed; [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words has a strict policy of being polite and helpful in all interactions with other members - personal attacks and insults are not welcome here, nor in outside contact with members that may have originated at the comm. Thank you for adhering to this; we do take this seriously as we know there are many places on the internet where flaming and intolerance are rife. WE ARE NOT ABOUT ANY OF THAT.

Hello everyone! It's been a couple of months since I last posted for Original Fic, and for that I can only apologise, but here I am now, and hopefully I'll be on track for the rest of this year!

If anyone else wants to host one of our monthly posts on Original Fic, I'd be happy to have you here to share any aspect of original writing that you like. Either comment here or PM me and we'll set it up!

In the meantime, for today's post, I'm wondering: What sets you off and running with an original idea? What sort of stories and characters are you interested in writing about that push you to write your own stories rather than fanfic?

For me, it is the 'what ifs' that get me going. )

I know it's still Monday somewhere... but yes, I am running late! Better late than never they say (and we won't even mention what didn't happen with the Recs post for January...)

I want to thank [livejournal.com profile] yuidirnt for guest-hosting this post in January, while we're here! Thanks, Destiny, I appreciated your help, and I hope you'll come back and host again soon! ;-)

Now, what's new? January's been and gone, so how is your Original fic for Feb shaping up? Got anything new in the works, or planning to finish an old WIP?

Are there any things that you guys would like to discuss in any of the upcoming Original fic posts? I'm open to suggestions on what we could get into some more in-depth discussions over, be it to do with the writing itself or with research, useful communities, thoughts on your stories, or even practical help and advice on the nitty-gritty of publishing/marketing or how much money you might make. Let me know in comments, and I'll try to schedule things!

I'm also happy to take requests from anyone wanting to guest-host or tell us about themselves and their writing process here in the entries to come, so don't be shy! Introduce yourselves if you're new, or ask me (or other writers/everyone in general) some questions!

I'd love to see how many original writers we have in our midst too, so please put up your hand whether you have commented in an Original Fic Monday post before or not! ;-)

New year, new banner! ...just kidding, of course, more like "guest host, guest banner". I'm Destiny and I'm guest hosting while H is busy having fun on her summer holiday, please be kind to me!

2015 is here, so I thought it was a good time to talk about new things. Are you planning to start some new epic novel this year? Or perhaps finally get around to write that one original story that has been rattling around your brain for a while? Tell us everything about it!

Do you enjoy getting started on a new story? Or are you the kind of writer who writes the ending first and then tries to work out exactly how things ended up that way?

And if you're here looking for a prompt, I've got you covered as well! Click here for a beautiful artwork. This is the year of the sheep in the Chinese zodiac, so let's write about fluffy and warm things, be them handmade scarves or feelings of love.

Hey everyone! I am late with this post - it was supposed to be last Monday, but things were crazy last week and LJ was also playing up for me, so after discussion with the ever-gracious [livejournal.com profile] kaige68, I am posting today, as I couldn't finish the year without some kind of wrap up for those of you who write original fic.

So come on down and tell me:

1. How did you do with your original stories this year? Better than last year? Worse?
2. How many original words (approx will do if you don't have an absolute count) this year?
3. Did you finish anything?
4. What are most proud of? Want to share a story or excerpt?
5. Any other thoughts or comments?

I'll get us started! )

Your turn now! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com

So, for this month's original fic post, since clearly I have not had time to write any more in any of the fics that some of you so very kindly prompted me for a couple of months back (I shall keep those prompts for future reference though, so thank you!), I have decided to ask about poetry!

Who amongst you writes original poetry, and would you share some with us? What are your favourite kinds/poems, and how easy do you find them to write (if it's something you do)?

Personally, I am into haiku and limericks, and love to pop those out whenever something springs to mind. I think I like that they both - while very different - have short and often snappy little bursts of things to say, and as they have a definite pattern, you have to make them work right or they don't work at all. The limit of them satisfies me; if left to a more free-form poem, I'm as likely to never make my point or find an end!

I don't have any handy to share with you right now, but I'd love to see some of yours, and/or give me a one or two word prompt and suggest either haiku or limerick and I will try to come up with one for you as quickly as I can! It will add a little to my word count, and stretch my brain a little too, since it's been a while for me. ;-)

And if you've never really written any poetry before but want to, now's good! Ask me for a prompt (or steal something someone leaves for me)!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
OMG! Another month has gone by since this post where I talked about continuing to write some of the prompts I had from others for my original WIP 'verses, and I still have not written anything for them... I'm sorry because they were awesome prompts! Unfortunately, it seems to have been one of those months where I just didn't write many words at all. I'll keep looking at the prompts though and make some attempt on them as and when I can.

How are you all doing? Did you manage to get any original fic written this last month? Have any difficulties you want help with? Ideas, prompts, thoughts about the way Character A interacts with Character B, or just a general 'who else is out there that writes original fic'? Here's the place to talk about anything you want to in regards to orig fic. Come on down; don't be shy! Even if you've never written orig before, how about introducing yourself and telling us what fantastic idea you have for a story. You never know; it may get you writing that novel you have hidden away in the recesses of your brain!

I'll start... )
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Remember last month's entry? Yeah, the one where I gave prompts, and in return asked for prompts for comment fics in our own stories.

I have been remiss again, because I really didn't give myself enough time to complete the challenge! I did manage to write one comment fic (link to story in this comment) (a little larger actually, so let's call it an excerpt) in one of my own stories based on a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] landrews, but I also had prompts from [livejournal.com profile] erinm_4600 and [livejournal.com profile] fairyniamh, and I still intend to work on them... so I'll use this month to do that (clearly a week isn't enough!).

Also in on the challenge were entries from [livejournal.com profile] fairyniamh in her Cookies (link to story in this comment) 'verse, and [livejournal.com profile] asphaltcowgrrl gave us a sexy little story linked in this comment. Well done, both of you!

A couple of others said they were working on stories or had ideas for them, so if you are still on that wavelength, my fellow original writers, would you like another month to write more? If you're already done link us here, as I'd love to see how you did, but no worries if you're not ready to share!

And otherwise, has anyone got any thoughts/comments/new stories or any other conversations about orig. fic that you'd like to have this month? *settles in, ears open* Come on down!
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi all you original writers out there! I know I missed an entry for July when my calendar wasn't sending me reminders, so I can only apologise for that. I am back on track now and seem to be getting the reminders again *crosses fingers*.

So, today, who wants to play a little writing exercise game? I know we did a challenge last time around, and that went very well for some of us... (yeah, not me, unfortunately).

How about a drabble or comment fic in one of your own universes? Give me a shout if you want to play and I'll find a random prompt for you (if you need it). If you join in, write your words and link or post them here, so we can all read them. If you'd rather just add to something you're writing in that 'verse, go for it - sharing an excerpt would be nice, but not required if you'd rather not share.

Let's say... any time this week. Track this post if you're joining in, then you can see what others come up with before next Sunday!

I'll start off - would someone like to give me a random prompt? )
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi original fic writers! Remember this post from last month? Yep, it's time to wind up the challenge fic from last month (or if it's an ongoing fic, decide what excerpt you're going to share), and show us what you got!

If you're like I usually am, you may not be finished yet, but hopefully you're well on the way to meeting the goal you set for yourself. I'm leaving things open for you to link or post in a comment to this entry before the end of June - by all means post in your own journal or wherever else you normally post your original stories (if you do); just link us back there! If you don't usually post or haven't yet, feel free to post in the comm and link to this entry.

Rewards are on offer for any of you who made it. Number off! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey everyone! It's that time of the month again:

So, I'm wondering if it's time for a challenge for our original writers...

Who's up for that? Check under the cut for details. )

So, sign up here! Don't be shy! Even if you've never written original fic, you're welcome to give it a try - the more the merrier! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey everyone, it's that time of the month again! Yes, it's...

This month, I'd like to talk about longer original stories (chapter fics or novels if you will), and specifically any you are working on/thinking about/have written, especially those in the sci-fi or fantasy genre, since that's the one that interests me the most. In truth though, anything you have recently finished/have started but not finished/are thinking about writing but haven't gotten far with, will do to start us off, sci-fi or not.

I'll start off by telling you a little about a futuristic sci-fi/fantasy fic (with a bias towards m/m and eunuch characters) I've left hanging for a few years, that I'd like to get back to... )

Over to you, my original writer friends! ;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hey, all you original fic writers out there! How are things going on your latest/oldest/newest/only orig fic? Need any help? Got thoughts about something you want to share? Need encouragement? here's the place to do it. This week, I'm opening up the floor to you guys to discuss anything you want. So fire away!

Blather about where I'm currently at )
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Yo! Original writers, how are things? Written much this month? Tell us how your latest offering/s are going, and chat away amongst yourselves too - let's strike up some conversations on anything that you're after help or advice about.

banner-Original fic

And, open for discussion this time, in case you don't know where to start (although other subjects are also fine), this month I'm interested in... )
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi original ficcers! how have you been going on your own stories lately? Had a good month? A not-so-good month, or been busy with fanfic and not got there at all, like me?

banner-Original fic

This month, I'm interested in seeing how you go about creating characters. What comes first for you? Do you get a name and go about creating a character to fit, or do you have the character developed and then you seek a name? Do you describe them at the beginning of the story, or gradually as the story develops? Show me examples of one (or more) of your characters and how you introduced them in the story, by giving me an excerpt here in the comments, or a link to the section of the story where that character enters the fic. Make it a character you're particularly pleased with, or if you're game, ask for other members' suggestions on what might make it better, or for help with someone you're having difficulty creating or rounding out.

And any time you want help or opinions, or just people to read your original work, remember this is a safe place to link or showcase it. Anyone reading, I ask only that if you have opinions to share, please be constructive, and offer your suggestions in words you would expect to receive them on your own work! I know you will all probably have this in mind already, but a reminder is never a bad thing, right?;-)
[identity profile] haldoor.livejournal.com
Hi everyone! *waves* It's Monday, and one of our new features this year is something I have decided to call Monday Madness! I haven't even discussed the name with our fearless leader, [livejournal.com profile] kaige68, but I'm sure she'll let me run with the title. What's happening with this is that four alternate Mondays will be devoted to Original Fic, Pimps, Recs or Coming Attractions. All will be explained as each of those four subjects come up. Kaige is taking Pimps and Coming Attractions, and I'm doing Original Fic and Recs. I'm starting off with Original Fic, so if that's your thing, or you're the least bit curious, jump under the cut and check this out! )
