How are you doing with your original fic? I am hopeless, as I have not even looked at one of my WIPs that I said I was going to tackle! I need to get on that, stat!

Anyway, here are a couple more prompts to hopefully kick you out of any slumps:
1. Wordplay
2. Don't you dare!
And while we're here, let's discuss: do you write the same genre/s as you like to read? If not, why do you think that is?
Personally, I like to read m/m romance and sci-fi best, with a lot of humour thrown in. If all three can be combined, it's brilliant! I also prefer to write in these genres, but I do find myself dipping well into the angst/dark fields, and sometimes kink, way more than I like to read it, which I find amusing! I don't know why that is, it's just the way my muses seem to go, whereas when I'm reading, although I like the protagonists to be overcoming some difficulties and/or growing/learning something, I prefer it doesn't get too angsty or dark (a little is okay)! I didn't use to mind kink, but as I get older I seem less interested in it, and that is where I head away and into more of the adventurous sci-fi stuff, when I can find good stories (The Expanse, anyone? I've recently finished the 9th and final book *Sobs* My saving grace is there is a bunch of short-stories too, so I'm holding out for the book that contains all of those).
And I think that's enough for today! Good luck with your ongoing original writing! ;-)

Date: 2024-03-08 05:13 pm (UTC)However, my favorite genres to read are fantasy and mystery/thriller (police procedurals, psychological thriller, etc.), which I don't write. Why? Well, I don't have the mental capacity to write well thought out fantasy. The world building alone is immense. And as for mysteries... I'm not smart enough (shhhh...) to plot a twisty mystery nor do I know enough about how police departments operate. I know I could research the last, but the first keeps me from it. LOL I have attempted a few mysteries, and they're fine, but they're not great plot-wise either.
I've also found myself wanting to write some hockey romance, but I don't feel like I've got a good enough grip on the game, how it works, or the slang to pull it off. *sighs*
Anyway... that was a lot.

Date: 2024-03-08 06:39 pm (UTC)I will happily help beta any hockey romance you decide to write. It's hard to write the on-ice action. I tend to focus more on the camaraderie and off-ice stuff.
Mysteries take way too much planning. Half the time I don't know how something ends until the end and I can't write the thing backwards like mystery writers do. Maybe when I retire, I'll try my hand at them.

Date: 2024-03-08 07:04 pm (UTC)Yeah, the actual hockey might be too much for me. But team dynamics, bromances, and relationships, I think I can handle that. And thank you - we'll see if this desire fizzles or flames after tomorrow (k)night. :D
Oh man, that's it, right there. I'm the ultimate pantser in that I plan nothing. And working backwards would just confuse me. I bet you could do it!

Date: 2024-03-11 08:11 pm (UTC)I am much like you in that I write without planning, generally, so the muses dictate what happens. Anything too difficult plot-wise or that would need extensive planning and research is way beyond me!
You could definitely pull off the hockey romances; I see Cat has offered to help, and that would definitely make it possible! I once wrote a story involving a quarterback and as I don't know the first thing about American Football, I mainly kept away from that part of the action, but there was one game that needed one team to come back from almost losing to just winning for plot reasons (yes, there was some in that fic!), and one of my American friends who loves the sport was brilliant! She helped me out no end!

Date: 2024-03-11 09:00 pm (UTC)Same here. I probably could if I sat myself down and made a point to plot a story. But, that's also now how I function so I'm not sure how well it would go. :D
Thanks for the support. I guess we'll see - I have an idea and I need to get some of it out before I know if it will go anywhere or not. I know enough about the game itself, I think, I just have no idea about any of the other stuff. Oh well. That's never stopped me before I suppose.

Date: 2024-03-08 06:31 pm (UTC)My reading tastes are all over the place, but I tend to read through romances the fastest. I generally write present-day stories with social commentary and romance mixed in because I don't like all the world-building involved with fantasy and sci-fi. What I'm currently working on is a fantasy (!) story that I started for NaNo 2021 that will probably be banned in my state should I get to the point of publishing.
I've done about 1k in filler scenes and character work so far.
I'm the opposite in terms of kink, preferring to read rather than write, but that's just because I hate to overdescribe and if you're writing m/m or f/f, there's only so many times you can say someone's name before it gets silly and you hope that someone can make sense out of the weird pronoun things that want to happen.

Date: 2024-03-11 08:22 pm (UTC)I do hope you manage to get where you want with your fantasy story though, no matter whether your state would ban it or not! You have me intrigued already! Good luck!
Oh boy, the pronoun thing can get confusing, it's true. I have found making sure you're clear about who's POV it is, and then minimising the really descriptive stuff and focusing on how that person is feeling about what's happening can help with that. Besides, being over-descriptive can sometimes feel a bit clinical!
