to clear from a charge of guilt or fault; free from blame; vindicate.

exculpate, exonerate, inculpate.
Origin: 1650–60; < Latin exculpātus freed from blame, equivalent to ex- ex-1 + culpātus blamed (past participle of culpāre; see culpable)
