For the second time, Donn rode out of St. Alban’s shadow with a collection of armed men and a member of HOPE to lead them. A dozen, this time, and an anakarist instead of a General, and although he found Gracen’s company no more tolerable than Warby’s, he was confident that Gracen had no interest in stealing LaGuardia from him. His presence there was to support, to silently exert HOPE’s control over the people so that no one, from the basest consumer to the brother who fancied himself Laedan in their father’s stead.
It would not be long before Nik fell pray to his vices again. Nik would have to rely on the leash his twin could provide just to stay alive.
It was not yet dawn on the equinox of the year. Soon the year would turn. With Donn in control, the only pair of hands the borough needed, LaGuardia would enter a new era of strength and prosperity. He would return to Fort Hamilton with enough men to ransack every building and pour every bit of that wealth into strengthening the borough. Through his wife, he would gain control of Kennedy too, as soon as her father’s age caught up to him. Everything would be his, and HOPE, too, would bend to him while also existing as a substantial supporter and interface with the people.
For that end, he would endure Gracen’s company long enough to get inside the Fortress and make his play.
