“He was an idealist…a pacifist…” She sighed and leaned against the sill, close enough to the glass that it fogged beneath her breath. Lowell had been collecting weapons for years and it had been Roland’s belief that his friend had been preparing to launch war against Kennedy to unite the boroughs into one entity. Mars, the god of war, he had once called Lowell as their relationship had soured under Quentin’s influence. But maybe Lowell had seen something different, the inevitable conflict that would come, the need to be prepared when it did. Maybe she had more in common with Lowell Channon than she had realized. What would Roland have said? Liam nodded. “Maybe. The world was different then. People have died…circumstances have changed. There’s zero chance HOPE will let these deaths go…especially the anakarist…” “I know…” But both she and Nik clung to hope that a dialogue with the Grand Elder would avert additional chaos. “Even if they do, if, as Segara says, they’re involved with juice…they’re not going to let that go. They’re not going to stop hunting people like us. No amount of talk’s going to the theme of ‘we are evil and evil must be destroyed’. It’s who they are. You can make all of the laws you want, but it doesn’t erase their fears.”
