The journey north, through vaguely familiar Kennedy streets, across the border into the Neutral, to the Change where he had camped with Jia and her companions once before was tortuous, made slow by the zig-zagging path Orphan insisted they take in order to lose any potential trackers who might be following them and Kato’s efforts to keep the horse’s gate tolerable for the abused woman in front of him. She had tried to sleep, her arms curled to her chest as though cradling a child, but after the first hour she instead wrapped them tight around Kato’s waist and clung to him the remainder of the morning. Her grip only loosened when she slept at last, but when the horse stopped midday at the Change, she was jarred awake by his effort to deposit her in Creedance’s arms. “Don’t leave,” she begged, clinging to Kato with more strength than he thought she should have. “We’re having lunch, Mama,” Eddie said before Kato could speak, helping Creedance with her and then accepting her full weight when she clung to him instead of the burly man she did not know. “We’ll be home by tonight…now you need to rest.” Setting up a small cook cannister the Kennedy girl had provided, Mortisa asked, “Where exactly is home?” Wrapping his horse’s reins around a rusted cable stretched taut between two treated poles which had broken off near the ground and lay rested at haphazard angles at the edge of their camp, Kato said, “North. East side of the Wilds near the Zone.”
