“We will leave in the morning, at dawn if we can manage it.”
After having repeated details of his tale to the Council so many times that he now wondered if he had, at any time during the course of the day, wavered in some detail that might make his claim suspect, Donn had been given the option to dine in the communal hall with the acolytes or in his room. Unwilling to bear the press of so many he deemed beneath him, annoyed that Lord had sent him away without disclosing the Council’s decision, he retreated to his room with furiously irritated steps and a glower of annoyance at the Grand Elder for having subjected him to such an interrogation rather than take him at his word.
As he had not eaten since breakfast, the steak and potatoes on the tray he was given had been devoured long before any signal of hope arrived.
He expected the knock on his door to bring positive news. Instead it brought Anakarist Gracen, the bane of his father’s existence, and a hammering between his eyes that blurred his vision as if he had had too much to drink.
“What do you mean we?” he grunted, wishing now that he had not already changed from his clothes into the plush dressing robe made available to him the night before. He thought the robe made him look weak and posh instead powerful and strong, but Gracen’s stern face expressed none of those opinions.
“I have a dozen soldiers at my disposal. We will go and…”
“I demand Grand Elder Lord…”
“The Grand Elder is too busy to make such a jaunt. He is required here. If it is as you say…and a change in leadership is at hand, there will need to be the standard examination of books…”
“That can wait…”
“So too can your appointment,” Gracen drawled. “I cannot say when the Grand Elder may be available, but I am available tomorrow…if you wish to make the journey.”
