“She is…and Nik…” For all of the anxiety in her voice, in spite of her obvious physical and mental discomfort, Oasis forced herself to speak, trying not to listen to the dozens of voiced performing an interrogation inside her head but to focus on those around her. Her message to her father had either arrived too late to warn him or else he had already known the truth and had wanted her hear to support him.
That he might have contemplated giving over to her husband to stabilize the inter-borough relationship which grew more unstable with every death could not be considered. She did not want to think herself a pawn, although in a dark corner of her soul, she felt as though she was.
“And now so shall you be, if you will assume the role. It is what your father…”
“My father,” she glowered at the anakarist, “didn’t want me here.” Not as laedan, at least. She was meant to have a son that could bear the name Hallister and continue the legacy of male Laedans in Kennedy. “He would sooner have put Donn on the seat…”
Aman shook his head. “That is not true.”
A male as laedan, yes. Donn Channon as Kennedy’s laedan? Never.
“I will not take it.”
“They won’t accept me,” Aman reminded her. “I have no claim.”
“And for me to assume authority is opening up the door for the Elders to…”
“What did you tell the staff?” Oasis interrupted. “What do they know about my father’s…?”
“That he is ill and indisposed…and in the care of a Healer-Mage,” Aman replied. “She traveled back from Fort Hamilton with us. She can be trusted.”
Oasis nodded. Having met one Healer-mage now, hailing as well from the region of Fort Hamilton, she guessed it was someone that Lilla knew. “Then we keep telling them that. You and I,” she leveled her gaze across the plane of the table and held Aman’s, “we will steer Kennedy until Donn is dealt with…”
