After the muttered command to enter, Donn was ushered into the office and left alone with the Grand Elder, precisely as he had expected he would be. But Lord did not look up, did not speak to him, as he continued hastily writing on the long sheet of vellum before him. Struggling to remain calm, Donn clenched his hands behind his back to avoid fidgeting but his countenance grew darker the longer he was forced to wait, and when he finally opened his mouth to speak, the act accompanied by a gushing intake of breath, Lord set his pen down, blew on the sheet to aid the ink in drying, and then set it aside with a cool, “Is there criticism, Master Channon? This is no prison. You are free to leave instead of waiting. This legislation is more important than any business you might have to…” “I have come from Fort Hamilton…” “So I can see…”
Derek slammed the folder onto the table, frustration simmering beneath his calm exterior. “This legislation is a disaster. They’re trying to control us without understanding us.”
Stiles leaned back in his chair, spinning a pen between his fingers. “Yeah, well, welcome to politics. It’s all about fear, not facts.”
“They want mandatory registration for all supernatural beings,” Derek growled. “That’s a step toward control, Stiles.”
“And that’s why we’re here.” Stiles leaned forward, his sharp eyes meeting Derek’s. “We outsmart them. We rewrite it. We protect the pack and everyone else like us.”

Derek sighed. “You’re insufferably optimistic.”
Stiles smirked. “And you love it.”
