“I presume he’s dead,” Donn said with a shrug as though he had no inkling of the long-term relationship between Geary and his man Fenway. “He was in the building at the epicenter of the explosion when it…”
With the corner of his eye twitching, a danger sign that Korma recognized even if Donn did not, Geary’s posture remained relaxed in his chair, the glass of wine in his hand slowly coming down so that it would not be spilled. “He wouldn’t…” he began, more confident than before that Channon was lying to him. Aman would never betray him by destroying the cache he had been sent to find, anymore than he would have tried to take it for himself. Pubinger had already told him that Aman had been at the site, but he had at least had the curtesy to express sympathy and the slim hope that Aman could be alive.
Pubinger had said nothing about Aman being there to steal or destroy anything, just that the man had gone below to see what had been found for himself before the explosion.
“I believe there’s more,” Donn continued when Geary got up and crossed to the window with its view of the southern sea. The day’s earlier calm and unseasonable warmth looked to be giving way to rain again. “Fort Hamilton is extensive…with dozens of buildings we did not get to explore. If we were to take more people…excavate and…”
“Haven’t we lost enough…?” Geary knew Donn would not follow him to the window. Years of exposure to the Channon children had revealed that the open sea was one of the few things Donn seemed afraid of.
“One man’s hardly…”
“One man?” Geary turned abruptly. “You come back with less than a dozen…and your father’s…”
“Stayed to oversee the troops that were left,” Donn said easily. There had been troops left behind, dead men and women burnt to ash to prevent them from coming back as grubbers, and his father too. That they were dead did not negate the fact that they had remained behind. “I didn’t want to leave it to him…but we need more manpower if we’re to find it, retrieve it, before…”
“Before who? Your father? HOPE?” There was a pause as he took a threatening step toward Donn, a threat Donn met by getting to his feet with a growl. “Or you?”
Korma, too, stood up. “Gentlemen…”
“I am the heir to LaGuardia,” Donn snapped, his shoulders pulled back and his chest puffed out in domination.
“Your twin is heir…”
“Nik’s not fit to be Laedan. Everyone knows that. With Jia withdrawn from the role after her father’s…”
“I’ve heard she’s resuming…”
Hissing through his teeth, Donn spat, “It’s what my father wants. I have Lord’s blessing…I have our treaty,” he reminded him, “I am my father’s heir…your heir.”
Geary’s eyes narrowed further and his face flushed “Your children are the heir to Kennedy. Not you! You have no more right to this chair, then you do to LaGuardia’s any more than you do to whatever lies in Fort Hamilton…”
“I have every right to…”
“To kill a general and bring HOPE down on all of us?”
“Warby died in battle…” Their mutual stalking brought them to meet half way, with Korma coming behind, reaching for Donn’s arm to pull him back.
“This isn’t…” she began.
Thrusting a finger into Donn’s chest, Geary barked, “You killed him! Just like you did your…”
Before he completed the sentence, Donn swung with an outraged roar, his fist striking Geary on the side of his head with enough force to spin him sideways and throw him into the nearest cement pillar. There was a sickening crack and a smear of red upon the dirty grey pillar as Geary Hallister slumped to the floor.

Danny stared at the photo in his hand, tilting it slightly. “You never told me you had a twin.”

Steve frowned, leaning over to look. “I don’t.”

Danny smirked, pointing to the grainy image of a Navy recruit standing beside a serious-looking man. “Then explain this. Spitting image.”

Steve chuckled, shaking his head. “That’s my dad. People always said we looked alike.”

Danny’s smirk softened as he studied the photo. “No kidding. The resemblance is uncanny.”

Steve took the picture, his expression unreadable. “He’d have liked you, Danno.”

Danny grinned. “Of course he would. I’m very likable.”

Steve laughed.
