Greetings Comrades! I am running the Weekend Challenge on this first fabulous December weekend and I decided we are going for Holiday Superstitions--WOO HOO! Just choose a number between 1 and 25 and I’ll give you a strangely humorous--or just plain strange--holiday tradition that people may or may not be afraid to not believe in :):) I also hope this brings some amusement for people who might be struggling emotionally at this festive time of year.
I hope this craziness inspires you, so please be as creative as you can--drabbles/fics can be as long as you want but at least 200 words and you can do any sort of art work the spirit moves you Just post your work by Thursday night at 11:59pm EST, and you'll be golden. Lastly, HAVE FUN!!!

Date: 2024-12-06 02:05 pm (UTC)Alright, here is your extra flavor :):)
10. Kissing under the mistletoe: The original superstition was you could not refuse a kiss under the mistletoe, if you did refuse a kiss under the mistletoe, you would remain single for the next year.
15. Polish superstition warns that any child born during the twelve days of Christmas could be a werewolf, or other half-human half-demon hybrid. Should this happen, the only possible cure is to draw blood from the infant’s brow.
Good luck!

Date: 2024-12-06 02:07 pm (UTC)This one's kind of dark--I can give you another one if you want.
6. In Appalachia, if you sit under a pine tree on Christmas Day, you may hear an angel sing. While that sounds like a lovely encounter, the rest of the belief asserts that you will not see another Christmas.
Good luck!

4. In Ukraine, it’s believed that if a spider’s web is found in the tree on Christmas morning, it will bring good luck to the house and those that live in it. Over time, Ukrainians have taken to hanging small tree ornaments in the shape of spiders along with their webs to encourage good luck.
19. In Austria & Germany: While jolly old Saint Nick rewards good children, Krampus, a horned creature, visits those who have misbehaved. On Krampusnacht, or Krampus Night (December 5th), people dress up as Krampus to scare children into behaving.
Good luck!

5. On Christmas Eve, unmarried Czech women throw a shoe over their shoulder towards the door. If the toe points to the door, marriage is likely in the coming year.
18. If you are lucky enough to have an open fire, then you need to get a good stock of fuel in: unless you want to bring bad luck into your house by letting the fire go out, it must remain burning for the entire twelve days of Christmas.
Good luck :)
Resident Alien - Shoes & Superstitions - Asta/D'Arcy - 335 words
Date: 2024-12-09 03:58 am (UTC)“D'Arcy? Is that you?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.”
Asta went back to her book.
Thump.
She heard D'Arcy quietly curse and then say “Third time's the charm.”
Asta got up to investigate. D'Arcy stood in the middle of the living room with her back to the front door. She held a shoe in her hand. While Asta watched unseen, D'Arcy tossed the shoe over her shoulder toward the door.
“What are you doing?” Asta asked.
D'Arcy jumped. “Nothing.”
“It might be better if you face the door, Cinderella.”
“Nah. It's probably not meant to happen.”
“Maybe you just need a different shoe. Hold on,” Asta said before walking out of the room. “Is this about that article you were telling me about? The one with the strange Christmas traditions?”
“It's not strange and I do have some Czech in my family. On my dad's side though, and my grandmother on that side is long dead so I don't know if she ever tried this or not.”
Asta returned with one of her shoes.
“I'm not sure if it'll work with someone else's shoe.”
“Maybe just let me try,” Asta said.
“But you're not Czech.”
“True. But if I know, you'll know.”
“True.”
Asta tossed the shoe over her shoulder at the door. It bounced off the door and landed on the floor.
D'Arcy saw the way it fell. “Not even close,” she said sadly.
“Are you sure?” said Asta.
“Yes.” D'Arcy reached down to pick Asta's shoe off the floor.
“Well, then, I guess I'd better put this away,” Asta said.
D'Arcy spun around and saw Asta on one knee, holding a ring in her hand.
D'Arcy dropped the shoe on the floor and covered her mouth with her hand.
“What do you say?” Asta asked.
“It's just a silly superstition.”
“And?”
“Yes! I'll marry you.”
“Merry Christmas, D'Arcy.”
“Merry Christmas, Asta.”

Date: 2024-12-09 02:25 pm (UTC)Words to a WIP is fine. Or if you don't have a WIP you like, then a drabble for next weekend's challenge would be great.

Date: 2024-12-06 08:55 pm (UTC)I hope this helps lift your spirits:
If Christmas Day happens to fall on a Thursday, the next twelve months will be windy.
In Norway, they believe witches and evil spirits roam the night sky on Christmas Eve, so they hide all of the brooms in their houses to prevent any witches from getting their hands on them.
Good luck!

Date: 2024-12-07 01:10 am (UTC)Here you are:
The Yule log would be chosen on the day of the Solstice (Dec 21st) and then lit by a piece of last year’s log, a ritual which was believed to protect the house from evil spirits, it would then burn for the whole of the ancient midwinter festival of Yule – bad luck would come if it went out.
Good luck :):)

9. At the traditional Portuguese Christmas feast, extra places will often be set at the dining table for deceased relatives. As well as remembering absent family members, it’s thought to ensure good luck and prosperity for the household in the coming new year
25. A spooky fireside superstition involves examining the shadows of those gathered around the hearth on Christmas Eve: if anyone’s shadow is missing its head, that person will die within the year
Good luck :)
