Kevin was pacing the sidelines like a caged animal. He didn't like seeing the team down and he didn't like being held out of the game because Abby wanted to check him out at halftime.
“I need to be out there,” he told Wymack.
“This is a meaningless game and-”
“There are no meaningless games,” replied Kevin. “It's important to set an example for the rest of the team. I can't do that here.”
“So, you'd risk injury in an exhibition?”
“Look at them out there. They're running into each other.”
“That's what happens at this stage. It's not going to be all perfect like with the Ravens and their little drills all the time. I'm dealing with players, not a bunch of automatons. That's why we have practice after the games. That's why I've got someone taking video. If you want to be the guy up in the box taking video, keep talking.”
“All I ask is that you turn me loose.”
“This is not up for discussion.”
“I hate you.”
“I'm so glad I get to see the side of you that I missed during your teenage years.”
“You're impossible.”
“And you're still not getting your way, so show the subs how to behave properly and when Abby gives you the all clear, you'll be back out.”
Kevin let out a huff of breath and stomped away.
Wymack shook his head as he watched Kevin settle in with the rest of the subs. “So dramatic,” he said fondly.
Danny sat on the sand, the gentle mauve hues of the setting sun casting a soft glow over the ocean. Steve was beside him, quiet for once, his usual stoic expression softened by the peaceful evening. They had just finished a long day—one of those days that felt like the end of something and the beginning of something new.
"Remember that song?" Danny asked, breaking the silence. "Turn Me Loose."
Steve chuckled. "You played it the first time we were stuck in the car together."
Danny smirked. "Figured you needed something to loosen you up."
Steve looked at him, his eyes intense but warm. "You were right. Love is a friendship set to music, Danny. I didn’t get it then, but I do now."
Danny’s heart skipped a beat, the words lingering in the air between them. It wasn’t the first time Steve had surprised him, but it was the first time he had been so open, so vulnerable.
Danny reached over, squeezing Steve’s hand. "Yeah, I get it too."
The sun dipped below the horizon, signaling the end of the day, but Danny knew it was just the beginning for them.
