“What is to come?” Kavan whispered. He had seen and felt shadows and glimpses, continued to suspect that something nefarious awaited him when he faced Bhas again, but none of it was clear. He hoped, since Korahm was here now, the Saint would provide a reduction in his anxiety and fear.
Instead, Korahm shook his head before hanging it in shame and remorse. “If only I had been able to save her…if only I hadn’t loved…”
“You are not to blame for your brother’s choices, for the things he did and the retaliation he seeks even now…”
“Aren’t I?” Kavan echoed Korahm’s words back to him, but he did not sound as if he agreed. “It is the basis for so much death…”
Kavan sighed and whispered, “Mine included.”
Their gazes met again. “Perhaps not…” He lay his hands over the hidden pendants and with a rush of heat, Kavan felt his internal well of power overflow its maximum level, as if he had not expended any of it in weeks. The sensation made his skin crawl, his hands itch, and his teeth chatter and clench in the effort to contain it. The Gate beneath him expanded within its borders, flared with an unusual intensity, and Kavan was certain that, if he tried, he would be able to seek solace and security in Raebha’s arms before night fell gain.
