“I know you can hear me, sinrec. I know you are there,” he whispered, ignoring the passage of time, ignoring the distant noises from the chelle. “War is coming…and I pray you keep your son…keep all of us…safe.”
They had not talked about it, and Rhyrdan had not mentioned the proposition, but with Enesfel’s troops so limited, it seemed likely that he would be called up to war the same as any other men his age. Being without him, not being there to protect him should someone make him the target that would hurt Kavan the most, ignited a cold fear in his belly that distracted him from the ball of sunlight and let it sputter out into nothingness in his hands.
“Did I do that?”
Kavan squashed the warring fearful sentiments inside, opened his eyes, and met Dhori’s apologetic gaze. Dhori could not have seen the glow but he could have felt the heat and power that radiated from it. “No. I am distracted.”
“Agdhi told me about Physician Talis. I know you were friends. I’m sorry.”
