James entered the restaurant at five to seven and gave a surreptitious look around. He spotted the two useless vice detectives at the bar. Which was fine for the moment, but once Donovan arrived, it’d be pointless because the bar was blocked off from the dining area. He’d seen Jake’s car in the lot, so at least he’d have one person keeping watch over him tonight. It was better than nothing, he supposed.
“Ah, there’s my Ginger,” Donovan said from behind him.
Trying not to visibly cringe, James forced a smile onto his face and turned to greet his dinner date.
“I promised I’d be here,” he said. “And I try not to ever break my promises.”
