She knelt down at the foot of the bed, carefully removing the throw that covered the large oak chest that was situated there. Over the years the lock had become stiff and rusty and it took a moment to fiddle and twist before the key actually turned, squeaking round and giving a jerky click. The hinges squealed as she opened the heavy lid and set it upright. Peering into the box, a smile danced on the corners of her lips. Inside were enchanted rings, lamps and other diverse things of miracle and wizadry. Her old wizened fingers toyed with the items, like a child discovering a toy box. Every item had been collected and carefully preserved, hidden away when witchcraft and wizadry had been outlawed. Her practice had been white magic, using it only for good as it should be, but that didn't matter, any magic was wrong in the King's eyes.
Digging through the treasure trove of artefacts, she came upon what she'd been seeking, deep inside the chest. A small smooth stone that rested in her palm, a source of white magic that had the abilities of healing. It was a rare occasion that she used her magic nowadays, the threat of execution enough to keep her at bay. But death had come to the village, a plague threatening the lives of young and old, a plague of dark magic that could only be stopped by herself and her own kind. She knew it was a trick, by the users of the dark magics to wipe out the clan of white witches who resided there, in hiding but in peace. In their homes that night all her sisters were getting their own healing charms, some stones like her own. Others pendants, rings, inanimate objects; each their own special charm which, when wielded correctly, channeled mother earths healing powers.
They all knew the penalty, but rather death by hanging that seeing their entire village wiped out. At the very least some would survive. Closing the chest quickly, she cast the enchantment spell over it once more, hiding it's contents from prying eyes should anyone come snooping. She covered it and got to her feet, bones aching from where she'd knelt, protesting as she straightened out. Pulling her cloak around her, the stone in her hand already pulsing as she let her magic flow, she made her way to the stairwell, her old bones making her speed slow and lumbering. Step by step she made her way downstairs, where her family waited. First she would heal her own and then travel from house to house, like her sisters. They'd save as many as they could before the dark clan flushed them out.
