Snarling to herself, she turned in the direction the stranger had pointed. She was no longer rich in ticks, but her name would buy her passage. There was still time. The ringing steps of boots, however, the looming hulks of three men who slunk past with disdainful glances of recognition, men she judged to be brako though none of hers, made her stop and stare after them silently for many minutes, a shivering sickness racing up and down her body from head to toe. Their cruel gazes felt like daggers and she was here, alone, without Vanderwall or Blayd or anyone else to protect her. Hebenon was no longer safe. Her daughter, a likely target if the brako took the claims of an illegitimate Founder to heart, was home alone with only Nanny to protect her. The Remembrance Day celebration was no longer important. She needed another plan.
