Small excerpt from the WIP I'm also trying to finish. LOL

“My motivations lie elsewhere,” Donovan said, a hand slipping under the table and resting lightly on James’ thigh.
James tried not to tense up, knowing that if he were going to help crack this case, he was going to have to eventually put up with a bit of Donovan’s advances. He’d just hoped it wouldn’t be so soon. “It seems like you and I share similar motivations,” he said, breathing through the panic that the heavy palm on his leg was causing.
“See,” Donovan said, his face softening. “I knew you were my kind of girl, Ginger.”
He forced a smile to his face. He didn’t want to be Donovan’s girl, although, if things were different, he thought there was a chance he’d totally be Trevor’s guy. James looked at the table, forcing those thoughts out of his head and into the ether. The hand on his leg felt as if it weighed ten pounds.
“Thanks,” he said finally, patting Donovan’s hand with his own before removing it from his thigh. “I appreciate that.”
Although, he didn’t, even though he did. Shit, he was confused. For the first time since he’d met the cowboy, he wished Reyes would come crash this date he was on. Anything to keep him from mucking everything up – his case, his life, his heart.
