Prompt 18 - LA Confidential - 277 words - Bud/Ed

Ed had lost his gun somehow during the scuffle. They'd come for him now and there was nothing he could do.

Suddenly, he felt himself enveloped in strong arms and pressed down to the floor. He heard a series of shots. A gun fired close to his ear and then there was no sound, other than his breathing, for the span of several seconds.

“Exley,” Bud said, close enough that his breath ruffled Ed's hair.

“Yeah.”

“You okay?”

Ed couldn't help but to smile. Of all the ridiculous questions...

“Exley?” This time Bud sounded more concerned, and then Bud's weight was lifted off of him and Bud was there in front of him, pulling him up, looking him over for any damage.

Ed put his hand on Bud's shoulder. “I'm fine.”

Bud stepped away from him. “Good.”

“Are you?”

“Yes. Glad I got here when I did. You shouldn't have come alone.”

“I would have been...”

“I believe the word you're looking for is 'dead'.”

“How did I make it the past three years without you?”

“Sheer dumb luck is my best guess. Not a mark on you in all this time.”

“Want to change that?” Ed asked.

Bud gaped at him.

“White?”

“Are you...?”

“I think of that night all the time. You held nothing back, and I... I liked it.”

“I'm beginning to think you do have a death wish.”

“Please, Bud.”

“Three years and it's still in my head too. What a pair we make.”

“So you'll consider it?”

“Yeah. Let's get out of here.”
