#8, 14, 21, 25, 34 ** She thought he was gone. Swallowing back the first impulse, the desire to either entirely ignore him or make a very public scene in the hopes of embarrassing and degrading him for all of the pain he had caused, she also pushed away the flutter that came at the sight of him and forced herself to nod respectfully in his direction as John returned to help her from the stage. Since she was barefoot, there would be no tripping over high heeled shoes, but the clinginess of the dress still prompted very careful movement on things like stairs.
“You alright, luv?” John murmured, following the direction of her gaze and scowling. He didn’t know what had prompted her nod of acknowledgement, but he could tell she was torn about him being there. It was enough to make him want to punch the smug tosser in his handsome face and tell him to get lost.
For Tamara’s sake, and the sake of the gala, John chose not to behave like an animal. But he had a host of spells up his sleeve to throw in the other man’s direction if only she would say the word and give him permission.
“Yes.” Whether she felt alright or not, she decided she would BE alright. She would be merry, she would enjoy the rest of this night, no matter what Carl tried to drop in her lap. “I think I need to fill a glass…” She hadn’t had a drink all evening. It was time to rectify that.
Carl might hurt her, emotionally, but with so many people around, he was not going to harm her. She did not believe he was stupid or vindictive enough to risk that
“One drink coming up,” John promised, steering her towards the bar and, he hoped, away from Carl.
