They’d known each other nine years and they’ve had their ups and downs. They’ve been through everything together and they were more than partners. Best friends. Maybe even more than best friends.
As he watched his partner with his son, it hit him like a ton of bricks. Almost from the beginning everyone said they acted like a married couple. Complete strangers thought they were Dads together. They’ve danced at a wedding reception, held hands in couples therapy, saved each other’s lives more than once, they say I love you on a regular basis and both hold on a little too long when they hug. It was in that exact moment, that a ton of bricks fell on his stubborn noggin, and he realized this thing between them wasn’t something that had slowly grown over time. No, Steve and Danny had that coup de foudre moment in time, probably that first day in his garage, or maybe the moment he knocked on Danny’s door in the rain, or possibly even the moment Danny punched him. But whenever it happened, it was early on and it was lightning. They were just too blind to realize it.
He could feel Steve staring so he told Charlie to grab something from his room. When Charlie left them, Danny said, “what?”
“Huh?”
“You were staring at me and seemed a million miles away Steve. Where’d ya go?”
He grinned.
“What?”
“I love you.”
Danny tilted his head and responded with his usual “I love ya, too, man.”
Steve stepped closer to Danny and looked around. “How long will Charlie be in his room?”
Danny had seen that face before, even if it wasn’t directed at him, so he said, “Hang on.”
Steve watched as Danny walked to his son’s room, heard him mumble something and then smiled when Danny closed the door, walked back to Steve, and stood in front of him.
“He’s working on a puzzle. That’s his new thing. Puzzles. I think he gets that from you.”
“I love you.”
“Yeah, you said. Love you too.” Danny wondered why Steve kept saying it but he was half afraid to ask.
“No. I love you. As in, I am in love with you. Have been since day one.”
Danny chuckled. “Really? Garage or when I punched you? I think I might have fallen when you were standing in the rain at my door. I knew for a fact I loved you when you came to the funeral just because you know me.”
“Wait. You knew?”
“Knew that I loved you? Yeah. I figured someday you’d realize you loved me too, at least as more than a brother or best friend.” He tilted his head and smiled. “Did you somehow miss the air heart? I know Chin saw it. He’d ask me every once in a while if I told you yet what I really meant by it but I could never answer yes. Kinda miss him asking.” Part of Danny wanted to punch Steve again just for taking so long to realize what he felt all along. He never wanted to push Steve because he didn’t want his feelings to push him away.
“Coup de Foudre.” He whispered.
“Just took nine years to admit it.”
Steve put his hands on Danny’s cheeks and finally kissed him the way he should have all along.
