Monthly Madness: Genres

One of these days I’ll do a little research and find myself a list of topics to discuss.  Until then, you get my ‘by-the-seat-of-my-pants’ approach.

Today I want to talk about genres.  We all have at least one that we love above all else as well as that one we won’t touch with a ten foot pole.  What are your favorite genres (or even sub-genres, get specific if you like) to write in?  Is there one (or more) that you can’t ever see yourself dipping your toes into?  Even better, what’s the one genre you want to write in but haven’t quite tried yet?

As for me…

I’m an avid reader and it’s funny that the things I love to read aren’t necessarily the things I love to write.  When picking up a book, I tend to gravitate towards fantasy, murder mysteries or something paranormal.  When writing, however, I seem to lean heavily towards contemporary romances.  I did branch out last year and managed to write my first mystery (of sorts – the mystery itself wasn’t really all that good but my boys were sure a hit), so I’m rather proud of that.  The thing I’d love to write someday is an epic fantasy but I’m not all that good when it comes to devising intricate plot lines so I might just have to stick to reading my Terry Goodkind and Tad Williams.

August Rush poll!

Here is the poll for August Rush! There are TWO questions in the poll:

For the first, please tick as many fandoms as you like - but please make sure they are ones you would personally play in for August Rush! This does not mean you have to use all of them in the challenge, it just means I will be better able to be sure everyone gets at least one fandom they like in the final choice.

For the second, these are fandoms we have played with before for August Rush, so I would ask that only vote if you really do want something from here ABOVE anything from the previous question. Please only vote for the ONE fandom you want the most. (The reasoning behind this is that a fandom from here will only be chosen for the challenge if there is not a clear-cut set of 5-6 fandoms from the first question, AND one of the fandoms here out-performs the most popular fandoms in the first question. We really want to stretch ourselves and cater to new fandoms every year for August Rush if we can).

Only I will see who voted for what fandoms, but you will all see the final numbers. I'll leave the poll open until Friday night PST, and on Sunday I will announce the fandoms for the Rush! We will be a little late starting because I am not organised (!!!), but I will be in touch with those who offered to help ASAP after the poll closes. We will aim to start on Wednesday 3rd August, or before if at all possible, but I will keep you all informed.
