Happy New Year! From now on, Tuesday is the day to ditch canon and ask 'what if?'

The quote above is from Master and Commander, which means this very first week's AU prompt is:  What if your characters lived during the Age of Sail?

Take your muse out to sea, and create a world of masts and sails and salty ocean spray. I couldn't decide on the mood music this week, so you get two choices. Both are traditional sea shanties (a fancy way of saying 'nautical folk songs')

Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her - generally a pump song, occasionally a hauling song. This shanty was sung at the end of a long voyage, and was the one time when the crew were allowed to vent personal grievances about conditions during the voyage. Sung by the much missed Johnny Collins:


Let the Bulgine Run. This shanty supposedly started life as a minstrel song, became a railroad workers' song, and then wound up as a hauling song for packet boats and whalers. 'Bulgine' was a slang term used in the final days of sail for engine:
