So here's this prompt's worth of words:
The wolf’s tongue flicked along his lips, dropping the sheet as he did so, thinking the remnants of the dream would fall away with it. And yet the sensation inside of clinging fast to that one thread, a thread from which another dangled and swung in desperate fear, remained with him. Not a product of the dream…Peter’s Romani blood knew that. Romani blood that made him more aware of the House tapestry of power than many in the family were also made him aware, when he paid attention to it, of the threads that comprised that tapestry. This one loose thread had yet to be fully integrated, and yet it was meant to be there.
David.
Letting go meant the thread would be lost. And somehow, the wolf had been necessary to make that catch, to hold on. Whoever that other was, they needed the wolf’s strength.
What would happen if he shifted back? Could he hold it then? How could he shift even long enough to seek help? If he did not shift…the longer he kept the wolf…the harder it would be to go back to himself.
But David was his friend…and he was one of the few David had made since coming here. Friendship…affection…those things prompted his choice. Whatever the outcome for himself, if he could somehow help David…wherever he was…then there would be few regrets. Sometimes sacrifices had to be made.
The black wolf ran free. The only regret would be the loss of the rose in the snow. But she would live, and hopefully so would David…and maybe in time she would forgive him.
