An Interview with ... Me
Yeah so...maybe this whole interview thing wasn't a great idea. For starters I never know what to say when asked to write about ...Me. I feel like it always starts like the beginning of an anonymous meeting...
Me: My name is Lou and I'm a fanfic writer.
Crowd of fellow Anons: HI LOU
I say fanfic writer, because well, within this online community, that's what I 'identify' as. I got into fanfic writing via the Stargate Fandom - my One True Love Fandom. I'd been a fan of the movie and show for many years, but hailing from pre-internet times, dial up and generally being a slow starter of internet exploration, it took me sometime to discover fanfic and even longer to figure out what it was. Then I had to delve into the depths to discover the good fic from the bad fic.
I think I still have a floppy disc (remember those?) of my early Stargate fiction. Ugh, don't think I could even look at them now without cringing a million different ways but hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Hopefully, I'd like to think, my writing has improved somewhat from those early days. Safe to say I've been writing fanfic since I was about...18..which to me seems a long time ago.
From Stargate I began delving into other fandoms as the bug bit me and I think it's fair to say I'm a slasher all the way (unless it involves Sam Carter, who I pair up with everyone because really who can't love and adore Sam Carter in all her gorgeous, ass kicking, nerdy, dorky fabulousness?). I have a huge soft spot for strong male friendships and if now and then a show wants to tease the audience with a little more context, who am I to argue? Right now my show of the moment is H50 and I've not written so much for a show since Stargate so I'd go with it being my Second True Love show.
In the real world, I work in a supermarket, or as I refer to it - the establishment. Go Me! Actually I really enjoy it, aside from the obnoxious customer or two that strides through the doors on any given day. I work enough to get a good wage at the end of the month, but not too hard that I can't have a day off during the week and a holiday once or twice a year. My life isn't my job, for me it's about my family and friends and enjoying life.
About two years ago I got myself out of a very abusive (mentally and emotionally) and controlling situation involving a 'church' (I use the term very loosely) and I'm still coming to terms with some of the stuff that went on in that place. I won't go into details, but I've discovered we humans are pretty resilient and life begins as soon as you take the reins and actually make decisions for yourself without fear or condemnation. I wasn't going to leave this paragraph in, but I'm learning to accept the past and not hide away from it, after all, it shaped 30 years of my life and is part of who I am. I can't be ashamed of something I was, at the time, imprisoned in through abject fear. I can celebrate the fact one day I woke up and found the courage to say I'm not putting up with this any more. (Found my inner Goonie - Never Say Die).
Writing was, and still is, my escape and I love it. Be it fanfiction, personal diary entries, random statements; I've always been able to express myself more fully in written word. Online fandom is important to me because it's a place I can meet like minded individuals with a love of show and expression (though I tend to stay away from the negative areas) as well as connect with interesting people who might just live on the other side of the world but who happen to have better taste in tv shows than some of my very close friends.
So that's me in a not so small nutshell, things I haven't touched on - I have a large dvd collection of films and tv shows. My favourite disney character is Tinkerbell. I collect mugs and old books. I believe in true love. I believe in God. I believe in marriage for everyone, regardless of their sexuality. And its/it's will forever be the pain in my proverbial writers backside. So will overuse of the comma. I cannot apologise enough.
So - bring on the questions. Don't make them too tough :P What do people want to know about the heffermonkey?
