He was an electrical engineer, who spent a lot of time crawling around the guts of a destroyer and an aircraft carrier. It was peace time, but his work exposed him to asbestos and he passed from mesothelioma in 2003. I always keep it in mind that *everyone* who serves gives of themselves, figuratively and literally.
My dad loved his Navy years. All at once, he had access to people and ideas that were so different from anything he'd seen growing up in his small town in the middle of nowhere. His eyes *always* lit up talking about it and those he'd met. I really think it was the happiest time of his life.
